The most visible cluster came during the 2022 promotion of Don’t Worry Darling; other debates concerned fan harassment of Olivia Wilde, accusations of queerbaiting, and concert-ticket access and prices. The stories differ in what is established: some are documented statements and events, while others grew from anonymous accounts or online speculation.
Why did Don’t Worry Darling become controversial?
The 2022 press tour for Olivia Wilde’s film drew attention beyond the movie itself. Harry Styles starred opposite Florence Pugh, and coverage and social media focused on reported tension between Wilde and Pugh, Pugh’s limited participation in promotion, Shia LaBeouf’s departure, the film’s sex-scene marketing, and a moment at the Venice premiere. TIME noted that parts of the alleged feud narrative rested on anonymous sourcing and TikTok speculation, so it should not be treated as a proven personal dispute. TIME’s account of the controversy lays out the competing claims and the context.
What was the disagreement about Shia LaBeouf’s exit?
Wilde said she fired LaBeouf because she wanted to protect the production and cast. LaBeouf said he quit because there was not enough time to rehearse. Those are conflicting accounts from the people involved; the available reporting does not settle the dispute.
Why was Florence Pugh’s promotion discussed?
Her limited promotional participation became part of the speculation about a rift. Pugh also objected to the emphasis on sex scenes, saying that was not why she worked in film. That public comment establishes her view of the media focus, not the existence or cause of a feud.

Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?
No evidence in the cited reporting establishes that he did. A short video of Styles taking his seat beside co-star Chris Pine at the Venice premiere was interpreted online as showing him spit on Pine. Pine’s representative denied the claim, telling TIME: “Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine.” The Washington Post also reported the representative’s denial. The incident is best described as a viral rumor that was denied, not as a confirmed event. TIME and The Washington Post covered the episode.
Why were fans criticizing Olivia Wilde?
Some Styles fans posted hostile comments about Wilde, including criticism of her age difference with Styles, old jokes, and her dancing at his concerts. That conduct was not representative of every fan. In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview reported by Teen Vogue, Styles said the abuse did not make him feel good and described the difficulty of feeling that being close to him could put someone “at the ransom of a corner of Twitter or something.” Wilde said, “I don’t personally believe the hateful energy defines his fan base at all.” Teen Vogue’s report describes their comments.
In a 2026 podcast interview reported by Variety, Wilde said she regretted staying silent during the film’s tumultuous rollout and recalled feeling that “complete fiction” was being traded as fact. That is her retrospective assessment of the period, not independent verification of every rumor. Variety reported her comments.
What does queerbaiting mean in the Harry Styles debate?
Queerbaiting is a criticism that a public figure or work signals LGBTQ+ identity or themes to attract queer audiences without making a clear commitment to representing them. Critics applied the term to Styles’s gender-nonconforming fashion and public image, particularly as he played a gay character in My Policeman. The debate concerned how his image and the film’s role were presented; it does not establish anything about his private identity.

In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview reported by Variety, Styles pushed back on treating his dating history as a public declaration of sexuality: “Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone.” He did not publicly label his sexuality in that interview. Variety’s coverage reports his response.
Why were Harry Styles concert tickets so expensive?
During Styles’s 2022 Madison Square Garden residency sale, fans complained about ticket availability and high Official Platinum prices. TIME cited a fan-created spreadsheet reporting an average price above $600 for a sample of those tickets and one seat priced above $3,000. These were a fan’s observations from a particular sale context, not official tourwide averages or a verified price series. TIME also reported that #HarryStylesTickets had more than 8.2 million views when its August 2022 story was published; that is a historical platform count, not a current measure. TIME’s ticketing report discusses the complaints and broader ticketing issues. The cited reporting does not establish that Styles personally set those prices.

How should these controversies be understood?
These stories should not be collapsed into a single scandal or treated as a measurable ranking. The Don’t Worry Darling coverage combined documented public statements with disputed accounts and online inference; the Pine allegation was denied by his representative; the Wilde backlash involved hostile comments from some fans; queerbaiting was a public debate about image and representation; and ticket complaints concerned a specific 2022 sale. The reporting does not establish an objective ranking of Styles’s “biggest” controversies.
