Why Connick’s office remains part of his legacy
One of the most consequential legal disputes associated with Connick’s tenure reached the U.S. Supreme Court in Connick v. Thompson, 563 U.S. 51 (2011). The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office conceded that prosecutors violated Brady v. Maryland by failing to disclose a crime-lab report in John Thompson’s attempted armed robbery prosecution. Thompson argued that the office’s failure to train prosecutors caused the violation.

The Supreme Court reversed a judgment imposing liability under 42 U.S.C. §1983, holding that the single Brady violation at issue did not establish municipal liability for failure to train on the theory presented. The ruling addressed the legal standard for holding a government office liable for inadequate training; it did not find that the nondisclosure had not occurred. The Associated Press reported that Thompson had been exonerated after spending 14 years on death row for a killing he did not commit, and that the Court overturned a $14 million award. In remarks quoted by The Times-Picayune in 2012 and reproduced by the Associated Press, Connick defended his record by saying: “My reputation is based on something other than a case, or two cases or five cases, or one interception or 20 interceptions. Look at the rest of my record. I have more yards than anybody.” The quotation reflects his response to criticism; it is not a judicial finding about his office’s record. Associated Press.
