Harry Connick Jr. plays fictional rock star John Allman in Netflix’s 2024 romantic comedy Find Me Falling. The role draws on a side of Connick’s own musical life: he says he recorded rock-and-roll tunes and played in rock bands while growing up in New Orleans. He also wrote and performed two original songs for the film.

What happens in Find Me Falling?

Netflix’s 2024 film follows John Allman, a rock star whose comeback album has flopped and whose best-known hit is fading. He retreats to an isolated cliffside house in Cyprus for a break, but visitors and a woman from his past unsettle the quiet he hoped to find. Stelana Kliris wrote, directed and produced the film, which Netflix describes as a romance and its Tudum feature calls a romantic comedy. Netflix’s film feature and the Netflix Media Center synopsis outline the premise and credits.

The rock-star setup belongs to John, not to Connick’s biography. Kliris described the central choice this way: “John essentially has to decide whether the love of his life is his music or the woman he left behind.” That dilemma links the career story to the romance: the film asks what a person will give up for music, love, family and long-held dreams.

Did Harry Connick Jr. really play in rock bands?

Yes, by his own account. In a 2024 Forbes interview, Connick said, “I recorded rock and roll tunes on albums and have been in rock bands.” He explained that he grew up in New Orleans playing many styles, and said the film’s music “felt comfortable” and “wasn’t too much of a stretch.”

That is evidence of a cross-genre background, not a reason to recast his entire career as rock. Connick’s official biography describes the music of his native New Orleans as foundational to his art and says he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at age five. It highlights a broad catalog, including When Harry Met Sally, Blue Light, Red Light, When My Heart Finds Christmas, Come By Me and Only You, and notes Grammy awards for When Harry Met Sally, We Are in Love and Songs I Heard. Those details put the rock-band experience in the context of a much wider musical career.

Which songs did Connick write for the film?

Connick wrote and performed two original songs for Find Me Falling: “Find Me Falling” and “Girl on the Beach.” In Netflix’s Tudum interview, he said Kliris wanted “Girl on the Beach” to work as John’s early-1990s hit. Connick said “it sounds like one of those early U2 tunes.” He described the other song as more poetic and melodic, written to serve what the script needed for another character.

The film’s music also extends beyond Connick’s character. Ali Fumiko Whitney plays Melina, an aspiring singer who sings in Greek; Netflix describes the role as her musical film debut. Her performances give the story another musical voice alongside John’s imagined rock career.

Why the distinction between Connick and John matters

Connick’s own history helps explain why playing a rocker felt familiar, but John Allman remains a fictional character with a specific career crisis and romantic past. The film uses that premise to put music in competition with other kinds of love, rather than presenting John as a portrait of Connick. Connick’s comments establish that rock was part of his experience; his official biography documents a career shaped by New Orleans music and a range of recordings.
