Beaver and Waco: distinct aircraft, different purposes
Ford described his planes as serving different purposes: “I think each plane is very different, suitable for different purposes and I enjoy flying them all.” That statement gives a useful sense of why a collection can contain different types, but it does not specify how he used the Beaver or Waco individually. The interview does not provide supported performance comparisons or enough detail to assign particular missions to those two aircraft.
Taildraggers: a configuration, not a full roster
A taildragger is an aircraft with its main landing gear forward and a small wheel or skid at the tail. Ford’s statement that he had three taildraggers is a count of that category in his account, not a separately verified count of his entire collection. The interview does not identify all three by model.

What did Ford use his Cessna Caravan for in Haiti?
Ford told the Associated Press that, after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he used his Cessna Caravan with Operation Smile to transport medical personnel and supplies. Recalling the trip, he said: “We flew my Cessna Caravan to Miami and picked up supplies and medical professionals — doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists — and flew to Port-au-Prince.” He also described flights to Hinche, where there was no airport but a field suitable for landing. What do the reported flying incidents show?
Incidents involving Ford are documented as specific events, not as a complete account of his aviation history or a current assessment of his flying. In 2020, CBS News, citing the Associated Press, reported that Ford was piloting an Aviat Husky at Hawthorne when he crossed a runway after mishearing an air-traffic-control instruction. Separately, CBS Los Angeles reported in April 2017 that the FAA had completed its investigation into an earlier John Wayne Airport event. The report quoted Ford’s attorney as saying his certificate would remain without restriction. That is the reported outcome of that investigation as described by the attorney; it should not be broadened into a general statement about Ford’s entire aviation record. How has Ford described the responsibility of flying?
In an ABC News interview published on October 6, 2017, Ford said he began learning to fly at 52 and described aviation as “a combination of freedom and responsibility.” He explained: “You put in the responsibility to know what you’re doing, and then you gain this freedom.” These are his reflections on flying, rather than a substitute for technical or regulatory information. Can the public verify Ford’s current aircraft collection?
The interviews and reports cited here do not establish Ford’s current fleet size, aircraft registrations, ownership entities, home bases, or whether he still possesses any aircraft he previously named. A model mentioned in an interview, a plane used on a past mission, or an aircraft identified in an incident report is not enough to verify current ownership. For that reason, lists that present a definitive, up-to-date inventory go beyond what these sources establish.
The FAA’s Vintage and Experimental Aircraft Program describes rules that apply to specified aircraft classes; some experimental-aircraft operating limitations require authorization before a person may act as pilot in command.
