Harold Perrineau warned that From season 3 would be darker and heavier than what came before. In a CNET interview reproduced by NewsATW, the actor—who plays Sheriff Boyd Stevens—said creepy children and monsters would return, but stressed that the season’s fear is matched by the emotional toll on the people trapped in the town.
What Perrineau said about season 3
Asked whether viewers should expect season 3 to be as frightening as season 2, Perrineau answered: “You should prepare for a worse season 3. Yeah, because the creepy children come back, the monsters — and then it gets worse. Yeah, you should prepare for worse.”
He described the season’s mood as “dark” and “heavy,” adding that the coming events are frightening not only because of what happens, but because viewers feel for the characters facing them. His warning points to more than a higher dose of scares: the horror is bound up with the suffering of people who have little control over their circumstances.
Why the season 2 ending makes that warning sting
The season 2 finale appeared to show Tabitha waking in an ordinary hospital, leaving open the possibility that she had escaped the mysterious town. The season 3 preview described escape as a tantalizing and genuine possibility while the town’s nature came into focus. That setup offered hope, but Perrineau’s comments suggest that reaching an apparent answer does not mean the characters are out of danger.

He said answers would arrive, but that they would lead to a further question: “Now what?” For Perrineau, the show is not only about solving its mysteries. It is also about what people do when they find themselves in a situation they cannot control.
Boyd’s protective instincts meet impossible choices
Perrineau said his own parental instinct to protect others informs his approach to Boyd. He enjoys playing a fundamentally well-intentioned hero who still makes questionable choices—a useful tension for a sheriff trying to protect a community in a place where ordinary rules offer little help.

He also recalled being surprised when Boyd killed the monster later known as Smiley, and by what followed: the body contained cicadas and had to be burned. Perrineau said he felt for actor Jamie McGuire, whom he described as a very nice person. The anecdote captures one of the show’s contrasts: grotesque events can unsettle the people involved even when they are part of the story’s supernatural world.

Perrineau’s remarks are a preview of tone and character, not a scene-by-scene account. He confirms the return of creepy children and monsters and says the season becomes worse, but the interview does not specify exactly what happens to each character or how the town’s mysteries are resolved. Its clearest promise is that the story will keep pairing frightening developments with the human consequences of living through them.
