Spoilers for all five episodes of Netflix’s 2025 limited series. The dating-app profile and the old case of Kat Donovan’s father’s death are not separate mysteries: Titus’s fake-profile operation draws Kat into the present-day investigation, while the truth about Clint’s death explains why Josh disappeared.
How does the dating-app mystery connect to the missing-person cases?
The Josh whose photographs appear on the dating app is not the real Josh returning to Kat’s life. Titus’s operation uses fabricated dating profiles, built with archived social-media photos, to lure wealthy targets into kidnappings and extortion. The profile is bait; it does not mean the real Josh is pursuing Kat or Dana.

Dana and Rishi’s disappearances lead toward the same criminal operation. Kat recognizes Josh’s image and follows the apparent lead because she wants to understand why he vanished eleven years earlier. That choice puts her investigation on a path that intersects with Brendan’s search for Dana and the case involving Rishi.
The real Josh is living elsewhere with his daughter and says he does not know Dana. His actual connection to Kat’s case is older and far more personal: he was present on the night her father died.

What happened to Kat’s father, Clint?
Clint was a detective secretly working for Calligan. Calligan had leverage over him because of his long relationship with Parker and blackmailed him. When Clint tried to break away, the secrets surrounding his work and personal life converged in the events that ended with his death.
The confrontation at Aqua’s home
On the night Clint died, he confronted Aqua after she saw him with Parker. A struggle over Aqua’s knife followed. Josh arrived and, while trying to protect Aqua, accidentally stabbed Clint. The finale’s revelation is not that Calligan directly killed Clint: Josh caused the fatal injury during the confrontation.
Why the truth stayed hidden
Stagger arrived too late to save Clint. He then helped conceal what had happened and arranged for Monte Leburne to take the blame. Monte’s confession was false; he says he was paid to accept responsibility. Stagger’s stated motive was to shield Kat and her mother from the truth about Clint.
How does the finale reveal Josh’s role?
A fingerprint on the murder weapon belongs to Josh. That evidence brings the old case to a point where the cover story can no longer hold, and Josh confesses what happened. His confession explains his disappearance: he could not face Kat after accidentally causing her father’s death while she was grieving.
Rank #3
That explanation makes his silence understandable as fear and guilt, but it does not undo the harm it caused. Kat spent eleven years without knowing why he left, while the false account of Clint’s death kept her from understanding her family’s past.

The final moment does not confirm that they get back together. After Josh confesses, Kat reaches toward him. The gesture can suggest that she is willing to reconnect, but the series leaves her decision open; it does not establish a settled reunion.
Rank #4
That distinction matters: the plot confirms Josh’s role in Clint’s death and the reason he fled, while the meaning of Kat’s gesture remains open to interpretation. Rosalind Eleazar, who plays Kat, told Netflix Tudum that Kat “gets revelation after revelation, and she doesn’t really have time to breathe.” Harlan Coben likewise told Tudum that “Josh left because he played a part in [Kat’s] father Clint’s murder.”
What to know about the series
Netflix lists Missing You as a five-episode limited series released in 2025 and categorizes it among shows based on books. Its ending ties the modern missing-person investigation to Kat’s family history, but leaves her next step with Josh unresolved.
