Happy Gilmore 2 is most likely to satisfy fans who want Adam Sandler back in broad, physical-comedy mode, surrounded by familiar faces and callbacks. Its crowded, nostalgia-first approach is also its main weakness: the returning pleasures do not always add up to a story as satisfying as the original. This review synthesizes published criticism rather than claiming a personal viewing.
What is Happy Gilmore 2 about?
The 2025 sequel catches up with Happy years after the original. The Associated Press describes him as a decorated, retired golfer with four sons and a daughter, pulled back toward the game after difficult events. The family’s immediate stake is more specific: CinemaBlend says Happy hopes to earn enough to send his daughter Vienna to ballet school in Europe. That goal gives the comeback a new emotional reason without turning the movie into a golf drama. The Associated Press’s report and CinemaBlend’s review provide those details.
Netflix’s official film page frames the story as Happy’s attempt to make a comeback and help fulfill his child’s dream. The broad setup is enough to orient viewers; the appeal lies less in an intricate plot than in seeing how the sequel revisits the character and the comic world around him.
Do the callbacks feel affectionate or overused?
Both. The sequel’s most reliable pleasure, judging from the critical response, is recognition: familiar characters and running jokes offer fans a direct path back to the first film’s unruly comic energy. CinemaBlend’s favorable review praises the steady stream of jokes, Sandler’s physical comedy, returning characters and callbacks. It also highlights emotional tributes to performers from the original who have died. In that reading, the references are not just a checklist; some carry genuine affection.

But nostalgia takes up so much space that it can crowd out the work of making a new story feel equally compelling. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the film “thwacks hard with nostalgia when it should’ve putted,” while acknowledging that it can still return fans to their “happy place.” That is an aggregator’s summary of a divided critical response, not a single reviewer’s verdict. At the time reflected on Rotten Tomatoes’ page, the film had a 61% critics score from 127 reviews and a 64% audience rating from more than 5,000 ratings; both figures can change. Do the cameos help the comedy or distract from it?
The sheer number of familiar appearances is part of the sequel’s “everyone’s invited” feeling. For viewers who enjoy spotting returning characters and unexpected faces, that density can keep the comedy moving and make the film feel like a reunion. CinemaBlend treats the returning characters and running gags as part of the fun.

The trade-off is focus. When a sequence is built around another appearance or reference, the story can feel less like a sustained comeback and more like a tour through recognizable pieces of the franchise. The question is not whether the cameos belong in a sequel this knowingly celebratory; it is whether each one earns the interruption. The critical split suggests that viewers’ tolerance for this approach will depend on how much they value the reunion itself.
Can the family stakes and tributes balance the slapstick?
They give the sequel moments of warmth, but they do not change its basic comic register. Happy’s effort to support Vienna supplies a concrete motive for returning to golf, and the tributes to actors associated with the original add a more tender note. CinemaBlend particularly praises those emotional acknowledgments alongside the broad jokes.

- Precision Engineered Stepped Steel Shaft - The precision-crafted stepped shaft minimizes torque during your stroke, delivering consistent face control and reliable feedback for improved accuracy on the greens.
- Low Center of Gravity Design Promotes Smooth Roll - Optimized weighting positions the center of gravity closer to the ground, reducing skidding and delivering truer rolls even on off-center strikes.
- High-MOI Mallet Head Resists Twisting - Crafted with a high Moment of Inertia (MOI), the mallet head maintains stability on mishits, ensuring straighter putts and boosting confidence on challenging greens.
- Bold Single-Line Alignment System - A contrasting alignment line simplifies targeting, helping golfers square the putter face to the target effortlessly and reduce alignment errors.
- Durable Non-Slip Grip for All-Weather Control - The textured, weather-resistant grip ensures a secure hold in any condition, while its shock-absorbing core reduces vibrations for smoother, fatigue-free strokes.
That contrast is part of the film’s appeal: earnest family motivation sits alongside exaggerated physical comedy rather than replacing it. It may also leave some viewers wanting more development of the new stakes. If you come primarily for the slapstick and the reunion, the emotional elements can enrich the ride; if you want them to anchor a tightly constructed story, they may not do enough.

The available reviews do not support a universal yes or no. CinemaBlend’s positive assessment finds plenty to enjoy in Sandler’s physical comedy, the jokes and the returning characters. The broader Rotten Tomatoes consensus is more qualified: the film can rekindle the original’s pleasures, but leans on nostalgia where a stronger new story might have helped. The safest expectation is not a reinvention but a familiar, deliberately crowded return to the same comic sensibility.

Is Happy Gilmore 2 worth watching?
For fans of the original and Sandler’s broad comic persona, it is likely worth watching as a nostalgia-heavy reunion with energetic slapstick, callbacks and affectionate tributes. Viewers who prioritize a carefully paced plot or a fresh story over familiar jokes may find the crowding frustrating. That recommendation follows the pattern in published reviews; individual reactions will vary.
Release and production context
Happy Gilmore 2 is a 2025 Netflix release, not a theatrical sequel with a box-office run to compare. Netflix’s current Tudum page lists it as streaming, while Rotten Tomatoes classifies it as PG-13 and lists a runtime of 1 hour 54 minutes. These listings and availability can change, so check the service and rating page for current details.
Netflix reported on July 29, 2025, that the film drew 46.7 million global views during its opening period. Netflix described that as its biggest U.S. opening weekend for a Netflix film and the largest opening for an Adam Sandler film. Those are Netflix’s figures and framing, not an independently stated theatrical gross. The Associated Press reported that the 1996 original grossed $39 million in the U.S. and Canada; that figure belongs to the first film, not this streaming sequel.
Netflix also said the production filmed in 45 New Jersey locations, including seven golf courses and centers, and hired more than 400 local crew members and nearly 3,000 extras. The company published those figures in its July 29, 2025, production feature, which also jokes, “No fairways were harmed in the making of this movie.” Director Kyle Newacheck described Sandler’s influence in Netflix Tudum: “There’s a massive respect towards Adam Sandler, because his tapes and early movies pointed me towards comedy.” Netflix’s production feature has the location and production details; Tudum’s film feature includes Newacheck’s comment.
