The official trailer for Paramount+’s Happy Face previews a scripted crime drama about Melissa Reed, a woman whose imprisoned father, Keith Jesperson, is the serial killer known as the Happy Face Killer. Dennis Quaid plays Jesperson, while Annaleigh Ashford plays Reed, a character based on real-life Melissa Moore. The series draws on Moore’s story, but it is a drama inspired by real events—not a documentary reconstruction.
What the ‘Happy Face’ trailer is about
Paramount announced the official trailer on March 4, 2025. The story centers on Melissa Reed, whose father forces his way back into her life from prison. According to Paramount’s synopsis, Reed must work out whether an innocent man could be executed for a crime her father committed. The trailer’s premise puts the family relationship and the consequences of the father’s crimes at the center of the drama.

Showrunner and executive producer Jennifer Cacicio described the creative approach to the Associated Press as a different lens on true crime: “I was less interested in the specific psychology of a serial killer or glorifying the murders or seeing violence against women on screen,” she said. “I just feel like we’ve seen that. I was very interested in making a true-crime show told through a different lens.” That statement describes her intent; it is not a guarantee about every scene in the finished series. Who Dennis Quaid plays in ‘Happy Face’
Quaid portrays Keith Jesperson, the real-life serial killer known as the Happy Face Killer. Ashford plays Melissa Reed, the series’ central character. Reed is based on Melissa Moore, Jesperson’s daughter; the show uses a different name for its character. Paramount also lists James Wolk among the featured cast. Paramount+’s series page and Paramount’s casting announcement identify the roles and inspiration.

Is ‘Happy Face’ based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that Paramount describes the series as inspired by a true story and by Moore’s life. The announced source material includes Moore’s true-crime podcast and her autobiography, Shattered Silence: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter, written with M. Bridget Cook. The show is produced as a drama, however, and the available official descriptions do not establish that every scene, character detail or plot development reproduces events exactly as they happened. Paramount’s trailer announcement and Paramount Global Content’s series page describe the inspiration and premise.
Readers who want Moore’s account in her own voice can look to Shattered Silence. It is source material for the series, not an official episode guide or a claim that the adaptation is verbatim.

How and when to watch ‘Happy Face’
Happy Face is a Paramount+ series. Paramount’s original release plan called for an eight-episode season, with two episodes premiering March 20, 2025, followed by weekly Thursday releases and a May 1 finale. Those dates describe the original rollout, not a future schedule. The current Paramount+ catalog page lists all eight season-one episodes as streaming, as checked October 5, 2026. Streaming catalogs and availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the service in your region for current access.
