Manhunter and Red Dragon are two different film adaptations of the same Thomas Harris novel, while NBC’s Hannibal is a separate television continuity.
For a first viewing, release order is the clearest way to see how the character changed across filmmakers and performances. If you want the story arranged by Lecter’s life, begin with Hannibal Rising—but treat Manhunter and Red Dragon as alternative versions of the same chapter rather than consecutive films.

#1 Best Overall
- Red Dragon: The Curse of Hannibal Lecter (Manhunter, Spain Import, see details for languages)
Option 1: strict release order
Use this order if you want to experience the franchise as it developed:
- Manhunter
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Hannibal
- Red Dragon
- Hannibal Rising
- Hannibal, Season 1
- Hannibal, Season 2
- Hannibal, Season 3
This sequence starts with Brian Cox’s restrained interpretation, moves to Anthony Hopkins’s defining performance, then shows how later films revisited earlier material and Lecter’s origin.
Option 2: start with the essential Lecter story
If you would rather begin with the franchise’s most influential entry, start with The Silence of the Lambs, then watch:
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Manhunter
- Red Dragon
- Hannibal
- Hannibal Rising
- Hannibal, Seasons 1–3
This puts Clarice Starling and Lecter’s most famous investigation first. The two Red Dragon films then provide contrasting versions of Will Graham’s earlier confrontation with Lecter.
Hannibal Lecter movies in chronological story order
The simplest chronological order for the films is:
- Hannibal Rising
- Manhunter or Red Dragon
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Hannibal
1. Hannibal Rising
This is the earliest story. It follows Lecter’s childhood during World War II and his early adult life, focusing on the traumatic experiences and personal decisions that precede the sophisticated serial killer seen in the later films.
2. Manhunter or Red Dragon
Both films adapt Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon. Their shared position in the chronology does not mean one is a sequel to the other. They are alternative adaptations of the same Will Graham investigation.
Rank #2
- Choose Manhunter for Michael Mann’s atmospheric 1980s crime film and Brian Cox’s version of Lecter, called “Lecktor” in the movie.
- Choose Red Dragon for the later Anthony Hopkins continuity, with Edward Norton playing Will Graham.
You can watch both, but place them side by side as comparisons rather than treating the second as the next chapter.
3. The Silence of the Lambs
Clarice Starling consults the imprisoned Lecter while investigating Buffalo Bill. The film follows the earlier Graham story in the broad literary chronology, but introduces a different investigator and a separate case.

Ridley Scott’s film follows the events of The Silence of the Lambs. Lecter is living in Europe, while Clarice continues to pursue the consequences of their earlier encounter. Julianne Moore replaces Jodie Foster as Clarice.
Why Manhunter and Red Dragon are not consecutive chapters
The most common watch-order mistake is assuming that Manhunter is a prequel to Red Dragon. Both films tell substantially the same story: Will Graham is drawn back into an investigation involving the serial killer Francis Dollarhyde and seeks help from the imprisoned Lecter.
The differences are substantial. Michael Mann’s Manhunter has a colder, highly stylized 1980s atmosphere and casts Brian Cox as Lecktor. Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon was made after Hopkins had become closely identified with the role and recasts the material around that version of Lecter.
For complete film coverage, watch both in release order. For a shorter chronological marathon, select one and continue to The Silence of the Lambs.
Where the NBC series fits
NBC’s Hannibal is not a missing prequel to the Anthony Hopkins films. It is a separate continuity that reimagines characters and plot elements from Harris’s novels.
The series focuses on the early relationship between Hannibal Lecter, played by Mads Mikkelsen, and FBI profiler Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy. Its broad premise occurs before the events traditionally associated with Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, but it does not lead directly into any of the films.
Watch the series in this order:
- Season 1 — 13 episodes
- Season 2 — 13 episodes
- Season 3 — 13 episodes
The show ran for 39 episodes from April 4, 2013, through August 29, 2015. Season 3 uses material associated with Hannibal and then moves toward the series’ interpretation of Red Dragon. That does not connect it to Ridley Scott’s Hannibal or Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon.
What about Clarice?
CBS’s Clarice is a related Silence of the Lambs spin-off set after the film’s events, but it is not normally counted as part of the Hannibal Lecter franchise. Rights restrictions prevented the series from featuring or referring to Hannibal Lecter, so it is best treated as a separate companion series rather than added to a Lecter watch order.

Is there a fourth season of Hannibal?
No released fourth season exists. The NBC series remains a three-season, 39-episode story. Bryan Fuller has continued to discuss the possibility of a revival, but development conversations and creative interest are not the same as an announced or released Season 4.

For viewers who want every major screen adaptation, use this sequence:
Rank #4
- Manhunter (1986)
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Hannibal (2001)
- Red Dragon (2002)
- Hannibal Rising (2007)
- Hannibal, Season 1 (2013)
- Hannibal, Season 2 (2014)
- Hannibal, Season 3 (2015)
This is the least confusing all-in order because it does not pretend the films and series share a single timeline. It also lets you see both adaptations of Red Dragon without mistaking one for a sequel.
FAQ
What is the correct order to watch the Hannibal Lecter movies?
For release order, watch Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising. For film chronology, begin with Hannibal Rising, watch either Manhunter or Red Dragon, then The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Red Dragon a sequel to Manhunter?
No. Both films adapt Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon and tell the Will Graham–Francis Dollarhyde investigation. Red Dragon is a later adaptation, not a continuation of Manhunter.
Does the NBC series Hannibal connect to the movies?
No. The NBC series is a separate continuity. It reimagines Lecter and Will Graham and should be watched as its own three-season story rather than inserted into the film timeline.
Do I need to watch Manhunter and Red Dragon both?
No. They cover the same broad story, so one is enough for a standard marathon. Watch both if you want to compare Michael Mann’s 1986 interpretation with Brett Ratner’s 2002 version starring Anthony Hopkins.
The Bottom Line
Best overall plan: watch the five films in release order—Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising—then watch the three seasons of NBC’s Hannibal separately. For chronology, put Hannibal Rising first and choose either Manhunter or Red Dragon before moving to The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.
