Sphero says its Sphero Edu app can still program BB-8, but that is not the same as restoring every feature of the original companion app.
What the BB-8 toy was designed to do
Launched in 2015, the BB-8 App-Enabled Droid paired a rolling robot with a smartphone or tablet experience. StarWars.com reported that the droid could be driven from a smart device, patrol autonomously, respond to voice commands and use augmented reality to transmit virtual “holographic” videos. Those are launch-era feature descriptions, not confirmation that a new owner can access every function today. StarWars.com’s 2015 account quoted Sphero director of product Allen Richardson describing the intended distinction from an ordinary remote-control toy: “Our BB-8 is obviously a little bit different than a RC or typical toy. BB-8 can communicate with your smart device. It has a companion app that goes along with it so you will control him from your phone — it’s basically like a remote control, but so much more.”
What works now—and what is no longer available
Sphero’s current legacy-products information says it no longer manufactures or sells BB-8 and that compatible legacy apps have not been available for download since October 1, 2021. Sphero says BB-8 can still be programmed with Sphero Edu. The company does not establish current compatibility for particular phone or tablet models here, nor does the statement promise that the original app’s driving, patrol, voice-response and AR features can be newly set up.
For a prospective buyer, that makes app access a practical uncertainty rather than a minor detail. Do not assume a retailer’s older feature list proves that the original app is currently downloadable or compatible with your device. If app-based use matters, confirm access and operation on the exact device you intend to use before buying; a listing alone cannot verify either.

What to check before buying a secondhand unit
The original model is listed by Best Buy as R001USA, “BB-8 App-Enabled Droid by Sphero.” Its original included items were an inductive charging base and power adapter. Their presence in a used listing should be confirmed rather than assumed.
- Confirm the model. Check that the listing is for the original BB-8 App-Enabled Droid, model R001USA, rather than another Sphero droid or an accessory.
- Ask for a charging demonstration. Have the seller show the robot charging on its base and operating afterward. A used unit’s battery condition cannot be inferred from its appearance or the product description.
- Verify included charging parts. Confirm that the inductive charging base and power adapter are both present and included in the sale.
- Check the body and head. Ask for clear photos and inspect the shell and head for damage, missing parts or signs of attempted opening.
- Settle app expectations. If you need the original phone-control experience, check the relevant app access and device operation before purchase. Sphero Edu programming remains a separate option, not proof that the legacy companion app is available.
- Read the seller’s return terms. Since Sphero says its warranty does not cover legacy robots bought from third-party retailers or resellers, the seller’s own return policy matters.
Best Buy’s customer-review summary surfaced complaints about size, control, sound quality and battery life. These are customer-feedback themes, not results of hands-on testing here, and an individual used unit may perform differently.

Age, surfaces and care
The user manual says BB-8 is “not suitable for use by children under 8 years of age.” It also says the robot works best on smooth, flat, hard surfaces, so soft or uneven flooring may not suit the intended movement. The manual calls for adult supervision while charging and cautions users not to open the shell or attempt repairs beyond routine care.

It may suit someone who wants the physical droid and is comfortable treating its software experience as uncertain. It is a riskier choice for anyone who expects a straightforward, fully supported setup through the original companion app. Judge the price and appeal against the specific unit’s demonstrated battery and charging function, included base and adapter, physical condition, app access on your device and return terms—not against launch-era features alone.

There was also a Force Band accessory associated with BB-8; StarWars.com covered using it with a battle-worn BB-8 in 2016. That historical coverage does not establish present-day availability or compatibility, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed route to control a secondhand robot.
