To follow Master Chief’s central story, play Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite, in that order. These games trace John-117 from the discovery of a Halo ring and the Covenant war through the original trilogy’s resolution, the Forerunner conflict, the Cortana crisis and the fight against the Banished on Zeta Halo. Books add context, but you do not need to read them to follow this game-led arc.
Who is Master Chief?
Master Chief is John-117, a human soldier in the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) and a member of the SPARTAN-II program. The program and humanity’s war with the Covenant are the background to his story: the Covenant is an alien alliance threatening human survival, and the Chief is one of the Spartans sent to fight it.
The official Halo book guide describes the fiction as covering, among other subjects, “the grim foundations of the SPARTAN-II program and the onset of the Covenant War.” That history helps explain the world the games begin in, but the games themselves provide the essential context for the Chief’s main arc.
What order should you play the Halo games to follow Master Chief?
Use this game-led sequence. It follows the central Chief story rather than attempting to place every Halo game, book and side story in one exhaustive chronology.

| Order | Game | What it contributes to the Chief’s story |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halo: Combat Evolved | The Chief encounters the Halo ring, the Covenant’s interest in it and the Flood, a dangerous life-form that changes the stakes of the conflict. |
| 2 | Halo 2 | The conflict broadens, perspectives shift, and the story begins to reshape the lines between humanity and the Covenant. |
| 3 | Halo 3 | Continues the original trilogy and brings its central conflict to a resolution. |
| 4 | Halo 4 | Returns to the Chief and introduces a new conflict tied to the Forerunners and the Didact. |
| 5 | Halo 5: Guardians | Develops the Cortana crisis and puts the Chief’s choices and alliances under pressure. The story also follows other characters, so it is not exclusively about him. |
| 6 | Halo Infinite | Moves the Chief into a confrontation with the Banished on Zeta Halo and sets up the events explored in later fiction. |
This is a practical route through the main Chief-led arc, not a claim that these are the only Halo games or that every game follows John-117. For example, Halo 3: ODST is not a Master Chief chapter. Some Halo stories overlap or retell events in another format; Halo Waypoint notes that the events of Combat Evolved have appeared as the original game, a novelization, a remaster and an arcade game. You do not need to consume every version to understand the story.
Do you need to read the Halo books?
No. Start with the games if your priority is John-117’s main journey. The novels and other fiction widen the setting with stories about different eras, characters and conflicts; they are optional context, not prerequisites for the game sequence.

For the Chief’s origins: Halo: The Fall of Reach
Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach is a useful optional starting point for the SPARTAN-II program and the events leading into Combat Evolved. It was published before Combat Evolved, but you can begin with the game and return to the novel if you want more background.
For events around Halo Infinite: Halo: The Rubicon Protocol
The Rubicon Protocol follows UNSC survivors on Zeta Halo after the ambush on the UNSC Infinity, during the period when the Chief is absent. It offers a parallel view of the situation surrounding Infinite, rather than a substitute for the game’s account of the Chief. The official book guide describes this setup.

For what follows Infinite: Halo: The Edge of Dawn
The Edge of Dawn continues the Chief’s fight on Zeta Halo after the events of Infinite. It is a next step for readers who want to carry on beyond the game; it is not needed to understand the six-game route. Halo Waypoint discusses the book in “Canon Fodder: Anthology Assemble.”
Is the Halo TV series part of Master Chief’s game story?
No. The television series follows a separate continuity known as the Silver Timeline, so its events should not be used to fill gaps in the games’ story. In Halo Waypoint’s “Silver Debrief: A New Beginning,” franchise director Frank O’Connor explained that the adaptation would use existing lore where it suited a linear television story while keeping the two continuities distinct. Treat the series as its own version of Halo, not another chapter in the game sequence.

What does “complete” mean for this guide?
This is a complete orientation to Master Chief’s central game arc, with selected optional fiction and a continuity distinction. It is not an event-by-event order for every Halo novel, comic, short story and game. Halo fiction ranges across ancient Forerunner history, the SPARTAN-II program, the Covenant War and events beyond the games; many works tell parallel stories rather than forming a single Chief-only sequence. The official book guide is a useful introduction to that broader range.
