Nick Castle performed most of the masked adult Michael in the 1978 original, while Tony Moran appeared in its brief unmasking; young Michael was played by Will Sandin. Later films brought in performers including Dick Warlock, George P. Wilbur, Don Shanks, Chris Durand, Brad Loree, Tyler Mane and James Jude Courtney. This guide lists the principal and recognized portrayals by film—not every stunt double, reshoot or archival appearance.
Who played Michael Myers in each Halloween movie?
The roster below distinguishes the principal adult portrayal from child performances and notable shared roles. The films span different continuities, including Rob Zombie’s 2007–2009 reimagining. Some entries have additional scene-specific or stunt performers, so the names listed are not a complete production log.
| Film | Principal or recognized performers | Role and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween (1978) | Nick Castle; Tony Moran; Will Sandin | Castle played most masked adult scenes; Moran appears in the adult face reveal; Sandin played young Michael. |
| Halloween II (1981) | Dick Warlock | Principal adult masked portrayal. Some references also list Will Sandin and Adam Gunn in young-Michael flashback material; those listings should not be treated as equivalent to a new principal adult performance. |
| Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) | No Michael Myers storyline | The official franchise catalog says the film “takes a break from the Michael Myers storyline.” |
| Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) | George P. Wilbur | Principal adult portrayal. Some references list Erik Preston as young Michael. |
| Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) | Don Shanks; George P. Wilbur is also associated in some listings | Shanks is commonly identified as the principal performer; scene-specific, stunt or cameo associations should not be collapsed into an undisputed single-role credit. |
| Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) | George P. Wilbur | Principal association; additional stunt and reshoot work is also cited in some references. |
| Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) | Chris Durand | Recognized adult masked portrayal. |
| Halloween: Resurrection (2002) | Brad Loree | Recognized adult masked portrayal. |
| Halloween (2007) | Tyler Mane; Daeg Faerch | Mane played adult Michael and Faerch played child Michael, as identified in the cast listing. |
| Halloween II (2009) | Tyler Mane | Adult Michael in Rob Zombie’s continuity. |
| Halloween (2018) | James Jude Courtney; Nick Castle | Courtney performed the principal role; Castle returned for select masked scenes. |
| Halloween Kills (2021) | James Jude Courtney; Nick Castle is also associated with the modern trilogy | Courtney is the principal adult Michael. Flashbacks include performers associated with earlier or younger Michael, including Airon Armstrong and Christian Michael Pates; they are not the principal present-day portrayal. |
| Halloween Ends (2022) | James Jude Courtney | Courtney plays Michael in the modern trilogy. Castle is associated with cameo or archival material; that should be distinguished from a principal new performance. |
Why the original Halloween has more than one Michael
In John Carpenter’s 1978 film, Castle is the actor most viewers see as the masked adult Shape. Moran appears briefly when Michael’s face is revealed, so he belongs on a list of actors who portrayed adult Michael even though he did not perform the main masked role. Sandin plays Michael as a child.
That division matters when someone asks who was “under the mask”: the clearest answer for most of the original’s masked scenes is Castle, not Moran. It also explains why lists that count only the masked performer can omit a credited, visible adult portrayal.

How to read the later credits and performer lists
A character’s masked appearance does not always map neatly to one actor. Stunt doubles, brief scene work, reshoots, flashbacks and archival material can add names beyond the best-known principal performer. Secondary film tables also differ in how they handle these contributions, particularly for Halloween 5 and films with young-Michael or flashback scenes.
- Principal role: The performer most closely associated with the adult Michael in that film.
- Child or earlier Michael: A distinct performance, not a substitute for the adult role.
- Stunt or scene-specific work: May account for a masked appearance without making that actor the film’s principal Michael.
- Archival or cameo material: A returning actor’s association does not necessarily mean a new full performance in that movie.
For that reason, there is no reliable single total for every person who has ever worn the mask or appeared as Michael. The answer changes with the counting rule; this guide focuses on principal and recognized portrayals.

The Halloween films that changed the pattern
Season of the Witch leaves Michael out
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) is the exception in the film series: it does not tell a Michael Myers story. The official Halloween film catalog describes it as taking a break from the Michael Myers storyline.
Rob Zombie recast the character for a separate continuity
Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009) form a reimagining rather than a continuation of the earlier films’ continuity. Mane played adult Michael in both; Faerch played him as a child in the 2007 film. The cast listing identifies Mane as “Michael Myers – Adult Actor” and Faerch as “Michael Myers – Child Actor.”

Castle returned for selected masked scenes in the 2018 film and is also associated with the modern trilogy, though cameo and archival contributions are not the same as a principal new portrayal. Miramax’s 2018 film page establishes the film and its release year; it does not provide a complete performer-by-performer scene breakdown.
