Haiti Rising is a documentary about P4H Global’s 15-year effort to support education in Haiti, especially through teacher training. A September 2026 screening in Miami brought that work into focus as WLRN reported the Trump administration’s termination of Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—a separate immigration issue affecting Haitians in the United States. The film’s central argument is that locally led educational change matters to Haiti’s future, not that teacher training can resolve the legal or economic consequences of TPS.
What is Haiti Rising about?
WLRN’s Wilkine Brutus reported that the documentary follows P4H Global’s work over 15 years. A screening at Miami’s Little Haiti Cultural Complex in September 2026 sold out, according to the October 9 report. The film features civic leaders from across Haiti’s political spectrum, including former U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Haitian diplomat and politician Dominique Dupuy.
P4H stands for “Projects for Haiti.” Co-founders Dr. Bertude Albert and Priscilla Zelaya, both University of Florida alumni, started the organization with a focus on donated goods. Albert told WLRN that feedback from people in Cap-Haïtien led them to shift toward education and teacher development as a longer-term priority.
That change reflects two different kinds of support, rather than a simple contest between aid and education: material assistance can address immediate needs, while teacher development aims to strengthen learning over time. The sources do not provide a head-to-head evaluation of P4H’s approach against Haiti’s national education system.

How does P4H Global train teachers?
WLRN describes P4H’s work as teacher training and support for partner schools. Duncan characterized the effort as building a “better system, a better delivery mechanism.” Albert connected education with Haitian identity and possibility, saying: “If it was strong enough to win the Haitian Revolution, it is strong enough to teach mathematics and biology.”
The scale and results below are figures Albert or P4H reported to WLRN, not independently verified evaluation findings in the sources reviewed:

- Albert said P4H had 50 full-time staff and operated in all 10 Haitian administrative departments.
- He said the organization had trained more than 17,000 teachers and impacted almost 600,000 students.
- WLRN attributed to P4H a 97% pass rate in partner schools, compared with a roughly 42% national average across all subjects.
- WLRN reported that first-time teachers’ education and classroom-management scores averaged 50% before training and 91% at the program’s end. The report did not specify the assessment instrument or sample.
- WLRN also reported that corporal punishment had been eliminated in 91% of P4H partner classrooms.
These numbers describe what the organization reported to a news outlet; they do not establish the size of any program effect or prove that P4H alone caused the outcomes. The available reporting does not supply methods, comparison groups or independent measurements needed to make that assessment.
Why is Creole important to education reform in Haiti?
Teacher development is only part of the challenge. The language used in classrooms affects whether students can understand lessons, participate and demonstrate what they know. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says Haiti’s curriculum transformation integrates Haitian Creole from early childhood through secondary education. It describes a plan to teach French as a second language from first grade and progressively reintroduce French as a language of instruction from fifth grade, alongside Creole.

The IDB cites figures from Université Laval (2023) indicating that 98% of Haiti’s population primarily speaks Creole, 80% speaks only Creole, and 18% also speaks French to varying degrees. The IDB also reports that Haiti’s 2022 National Evaluation found failures in French and Creole as well as mathematics and science, with students performing significantly better on Creole assessments than on French assessments. It says teaching quality remains a challenge across subjects and languages.
The reform builds on an initiative begun in 2018, with a comprehensive curriculum overhaul pursued by Haiti’s Ministry of National Education and Professional Development (MENFP) since 2022. Implementation is not automatic: the IDB identifies the continued use of French as the teaching language in many schools, stigma toward Creole, and the ongoing work of standardizing and digitizing Creole for instruction. MENFP is collaborating with Akademi Kreyòl on this work.

To illustrate the stakes, the IDB quotes a UNESCO-IBE 2024 working document comparing first-language instruction with other approaches: it cites a 20% gain, fivefold lower repetition and threefold lower dropout. These are figures from a working document as presented by the IDB, not a forecast of what Haiti’s reform will achieve. The IDB also cites UNESCO’s 2016 recommendation that children receive six to eight years of mother-tongue learning.
The IDB describes a $44 million grant involving MENFP, Education Above All Foundation and the Global Partnership for Education, intended to benefit 150,000 children. That stated intention is not a reported count of children already reached.

How does the film connect education and the end of Haitian TPS?
WLRN places the film’s education message alongside the Trump administration’s reported termination of Haitian TPS. The report estimated that 158,000 Haitians across Florida were affected and described them as in legal and economic limbo. That is WLRN’s characterization and estimate; the article passage does not identify the estimate’s underlying methodology.
The reporting available here does not establish the controlling Department of Homeland Security notice, the effective date, or the status of litigation or court orders. TPS is a legal immigration designation, so people making decisions about their own status should check current notices from the U.S. government and relevant court records or seek qualified immigration legal advice. The reported Florida figure should not be treated as a count of people whose status or eligibility has been individually verified.
Albert argued that “An educational transformation on the ground” could prevent Haitian migration. That is his view of education’s potential, not evidence that P4H’s programs change migration patterns. He also described the film as showing that Haitians can address national challenges, saying, “quality education is key to that.”
What the film’s case establishes—and what it does not
Haiti Rising presents education as a locally shaped response to a long-term national challenge. The reported shift from donated goods to teacher training reflects Albert’s account of listening to community feedback; the organization’s reach and outcomes are reported claims. Separately, the IDB’s discussion of Creole-centered curriculum reform explains why language access and teaching quality matter to national education policy.
