The film opened in Japanese theaters on February 16, 2024. That date was announced by the official Haikyu!! website on September 24, 2023, several months before the international rollout.
Therefore, February 16 was the Japanese premiere—not the worldwide release date. The phrase “worldwide release” refers to the staggered international theatrical launch that started on May 30.
What is The Dumpster Battle about?
The movie adapts the long-awaited Spring High third-round match between Karasuno High and Nekoma High. Their rivalry was built through repeated practice matches and training camps, making this official tournament meeting one of the central encounters in the Haikyu!! story.

HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle is part of the Haikyu!! FINAL project. Susumu Mitsunaka directed and wrote the screenplay, Production I.G handled the animation, and the movie is based on Haruichi Furudate’s manga. Toho distributed the film in Japan.
Is The Dumpster Battle a recap movie?
No. Unlike earlier compilation films such as Haikyu!! the Movie: Talent and Sense and Haikyu!! The Movie: Battle of Concepts, The Dumpster Battle adapts new story material that had not previously been animated as a complete match.

Which manga volume covers The Dumpster Battle?
The official Japanese movie site identifies the beginning of the match in manga volume 33. The theatrical bonus booklet, titled volume 33.5, included new material, character illustrations, a question-and-answer feature with Furudate and storyboard material for chapter 322. That booklet was a theatrical bonus rather than a standard replacement for the manga volumes.
Readers who want the manga version should look at Haikyu!!, Vol. 34. VIZ describes that volume as the point where the long-awaited Dumpster Battle begins, including Nekoma’s aggressive synchronized attacks. Volume 34 is therefore a particularly relevant companion for anyone who has watched the film and wants to continue exploring the surrounding manga material; it should not be treated as a complete print version of everything shown in the movie.
For a broader introduction or reread, VIZ’s Haikyu!! manga catalog includes the individual English-language volumes, 3-in-1 editions and related material such as The Art of Haikyu!!.
