Hacks won Outstanding Comedy Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024, interrupting expectations that The Bear might take the night’s top comedy prize. The Television Academy also awarded Hacks acting and writing honors, making its series win part of a three-category showing.
What happened at the 2024 Emmys?
At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Hacks took Outstanding Comedy Series. The ceremony was held September 15, 2024, at the Peacock Theater at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, with Eugene Levy and Dan Levy as hosts. The Television Academy’s 2024 results identify Hacks as a Max program and name it the winner of the comedy-series category.
Why did the win feel like a surprise?
The surprise was about the contest’s narrative, not a published prediction or vote count. In contemporaneous coverage, Los Angeles Times columnist Glenn Whipp described The Bear as a likely candidate to sweep after collecting wins in other comedy categories. The final series award instead went to Hacks.
Whipp also pointed to discussion around whether The Bear fit the comedy classification and to criticism and audience reactions concerning the season under consideration. Those points were his analysis of the evening, not an official explanation from the Television Academy or evidence of how individual voters decided. The Academy’s recap of the 76th Emmy winners records the result, but does not state why voters chose it.

What other comedy awards did Hacks win?
The series’ top-category win came alongside two individual honors. The Academy records three comedy-category wins for Hacks that night:
- Outstanding Comedy Series: Hacks.
- Lead Actress in a Comedy: Jean Smart.
- Writing for a Comedy Series: Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky.
The win belongs to the September 15 ceremony, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. Another Primetime Emmy ceremony had already taken place earlier in calendar year 2024, which can make references to the “2024 Emmys” ambiguous without the ceremony number or date.

What did the hosts say about The Bear?
Whipp reported that Eugene Levy addressed the classification debate in the opening monologue: “I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy … but in the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we will not be making any jokes,” Whipp’s Los Angeles Times account reproduced the line. The joke acknowledged the debate without resolving it; the official award result was Hacks for Outstanding Comedy Series.
After the win, the Television Academy’s Thank You Cam page listed an appearance by the Hacks team. The listing confirms the post-win appearance but does not provide a transcript.
