Bailey, known for playing Joe on Grey’s Anatomy, has disclosed that he has congenital myasthenic syndrome (CMS), a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder. He says he uses a wheelchair for some activities, including moving around a film set to conserve energy—not because he has said he can no longer walk.
What diagnosis did Steven W. Bailey disclose?
In a January 9, 2026 interview with Good Morning America, Bailey said he had been diagnosed with congenital myasthenic syndrome. ABC News describes CMS as a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. Bailey said his symptoms began in 2020 and that he spent several years seeking answers before receiving the diagnosis.
Bailey has not publicly specified his CMS subtype, genetic variant, treatment plan, or prognosis in the ABC News report. The account explains his own experience; it does not establish what another person with CMS will experience.
Why is he using a wheelchair?
Bailey said his hands, arms, and legs tire more quickly than he expects. Describing an early experience, he told Good Morning America: “I tried to turn my hand with a screwdriver and my entire arm just went into a lockdown situation.”

He uses a wheelchair for some mobility, including to move around a film set while saving energy for a scene. Bailey said, “Most of the stuff I usually do on film, I can still do. I just get tired quicker and I might need to move around the set on the wheelchair just to save my energy for the scene itself.” His statement describes using a wheelchair as an energy-conservation tool; the report does not say he is unable to walk.
What did Bailey say about representation?
Bailey said he hopes his disclosure can help raise awareness of wheelchair users and create more opportunities for their representation in film and television. “I think there’s a real opportunity to show people onscreen who are like me, ambulatory wheelchair users,” he said.
