In a 2020 radio interview, Australian singer Guy Sebastian recounted that Los Angeles police approached him with guns drawn after his car was reported stolen. He said the vehicle had been towed, that he later found it and called police, and that an officer pressed a gun to his forehead while officers still believed the car was stolen. News reports say the encounter ended after officers recognized he owned the car. The account has not been independently confirmed in the material available here.
How the encounter unfolded, according to Sebastian
Sebastian described the incident as something that had happened while he was living in Los Angeles. NME reported that he discussed it on KIIS FM’s iHeart Radio Countdown the week before its July 6, 2020 story; the coverage therefore recounts a past event, not a new police encounter in 2020.
The car was towed and reported stolen
According to the contemporaneous reports, Sebastian’s car was towed. The West Australian characterized the tow as illegal, while other coverage described the circumstances from Sebastian’s perspective. He reported the car stolen, then later located it with help from a passer-by.
He called police and waited at a carwash
After finding the vehicle, Sebastian said he contacted police to tell them it had been found. He went to a nearby carwash while waiting. Pedestrian.TV reported that he was on hold for 45 minutes; NME also described him as being on hold but did not give a duration.

Officers arrived while the car was still listed as stolen
Sebastian said officers converged on him with guns drawn because they understood that he was driving a stolen car. NME quoted him saying, “He actually had the gun pressed into my forehead.” He also described the officers arriving at the carwash with guns drawn. Music Feeds quoted his explanation of the officers’ perspective: “To them, I’m driving a stolen car.”
The reports say officers ordered Sebastian to the ground and that one officer put a knee on him and pressed a gun to his forehead. They say an officer listened to his explanation, the officers recognized he lawfully owned the vehicle, and the situation was diffused.

The published accounts describe Sebastian’s recollection from a radio interview. The material available here does not include the original interview recording or transcript, a police statement, or a public record of the encounter. The reported actions should therefore be understood as details attributed to Sebastian by contemporaneous news outlets, not as independently verified police findings.
Sebastian also commented on gun ownership in the United States and the challenges police may face when responding to heavily armed members of the public. Those were his views, not statistics or a factual description of every US resident or police encounter.
