A 2022 report described an uncertain future because the next generation was not keen to take over; a retailer later listed a 1432 (2025–2026) Directory Panjika, which alone does not confirm current publishing. The story is also one of how a Bengali annual almanac became a practical household reference, adapted its formats and carried specialized calendar knowledge across generations.
What is a panjika?
A Bengali panjika is an annual almanac for consulting calendar, religious-observance and auspicious-time information. Readers use it to look up weekdays, tithis (lunar dates), nakshatras, yoga and karana, Ekadashi, full and new moons, festival dates and auspicious times, Anandabazar reported in 2020 (Anandabazar, 2020). It is not simply a horoscope book: the full Gupta Press edition also includes directions for pujas and daily rituals, according to Telegraph India’s 2022 feature.
When did Gupta Press and its almanac begin?
Telegraph India’s 2022 account distinguishes the press from the publication: Durgacharan Gupta founded Gupta Press in Kolkata in 1861, and the first Gupta Press Panjika appeared in 1869, in Bengali year 1276. A 2017 Scroll.in feature describes Durga Charan Gupta as establishing the press in 1869; the later account’s separate dates for the press and its first almanac clarify the chronology (Scroll.in, 2017).
The business and its premises changed over time. Telegraph India traces moves from Mirjafar’s Lane in North Kolkata to Cornwallis Street in 1879, then to 37/7 Beniatola Lane around 1920. It says the press was auctioned around 1920 and bought by Nripendranath Bhose, while the publication retained the Gupta Press name. The 2017 Scroll report said the original College Street press had shut and printing was being outsourced to an offset facility. These accounts distinguish a publisher’s address from the location where printing takes place; neither by itself proves whether the publication is currently operating.

How does the panjika calculate dates—and why can almanacs disagree?
Telegraph India reported in 2022 that Gupta Press follows the Surya Siddhanta system and named Pandit Achintya Bhattacharya as its calculator, continuing a family tradition. Scroll’s 2017 feature described the mass-market Gupta Press version as following the Odrik system or Surjyasiddhanta, and contrasted it with Bishuddha Siddhanta, also called Drik Siddhanta. The 2020 Anandabazar report likewise noted that publishers can give different festival dates because their calculations differ.
These are differences between calculation traditions, not evidence that one almanac is simply right and another wrong. The reporting is not a technical astronomical evaluation of the systems. If a date affects a ritual or observance, follow the calendar of the institution or community tradition you observe.

How did the publication adapt its formats?
Telegraph India’s 2022 feature describes full and half editions, as well as a newer pocket-friendly version. The full, directory-like book contains puja and daily-ritual directions that are absent from the half edition. Its size changed in response to the volume of content and paper costs; the feature says it appeared as a small book from 1935 to 1945 before changing shape again. Scroll’s 2017 account also describes a wartime reduction to pocket size during newsprint shortages, and says priests and homemakers rejected a proposed change from the familiar pink-red cover.
The medium changed too, though the reports establish historical availability rather than current access. Telegraph India said in 2022 that the panjika had been available on CD and DVD and could be accessed as a PDF. Scroll reported in 2017 that services had gone digital and that an app was then being planned; that does not establish that the app launched or remains available.

What do the circulation and archive figures tell us?
Scroll’s 2017 feature reported that 2,000 copies were printed and sold at two annas each in Durga Charan Gupta’s time. It described a then-current print run of 400,000 copies across formats and said readership was twice that print figure; that readership estimate was a reported claim, not audited circulation. These are historical figures, not current sales or readership totals.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Gupta Press Panjika still being published?
Current status is not established by the available reporting. In 2022, managing director Arijit Roy Chowdhury told Telegraph India, “This business requires a lot of expertise. Knowledge of astronomy and astrology is required but the next generation does not have the will or patience to learn,” describing a succession concern rather than announcing closure. A retailer listing for a Directory Panjika labeled 1432 (2025–2026) shows that an edition was listed for that period, but a retailer entry does not confirm the publisher’s 2026 operations or distribution.

Earlier accounts document efforts to sustain related work: Telegraph India reported that Gupta Press printed date cards for weddings, rice-feeding and thread ceremonies, and housewarmings. It also mentioned a WhatsApp ordering number at the time of publication. That route and number are dated details, not verified current ordering information.
Roy Chowdhury offered a different measure of the almanac’s relevance in a 2017 interview with Scroll: “As long as people get married, die or start something new, the Panjika will be relevant,” he said. In the same interview, speaking about the printing industry, he said: “Besides, the indigenous printing and publishing business is dead,” a broad assessment of the sector, not proof that Gupta Press Panjika itself had ended.
