Before Guardians of the Galaxy, he was already a familiar face to television audiences as Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation. Playing Peter Quill—Star-Lord—moved him from a recurring sitcom role into his first feature-film lead, putting his comic timing at the center of a Marvel space adventure.
Before Star-Lord, Pratt was best known as Andy Dwyer
Pratt’s path to a leading role began well before Marvel. A 2014 profile in The Independent traces his early television work through Everwood and The O.C., and reports that he moved from restaurant work toward acting after meeting filmmaker Rae Dawn Chong in Maui. Those biographical details offer a glimpse of his route into the profession, but his most recognizable pre-Guardians role was Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation.
Andy began as a guest character, initially expected to appear for six episodes, according to The Independent. Pratt later returned as a regular. ABC described Andy as the role for which he was best known when it covered the film’s release in July 2014. The character’s goofy, easygoing comic persona gave viewers a clear reference point for Pratt—but not the whole range of parts he was pursuing.
He was auditioning for major roles before Marvel
Pratt was not an unknown suddenly plucked from obscurity. He had television credits and a prominent sitcom role, while also auditioning for high-profile film projects. TIME reported that he had tried out for Jake Sully in Avatar and Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot. In a 2014 WIRED interview, Pratt also described auditions for Star Trek, Avatar and G.I. Joe as part of his broader pursuit of major roles. These accounts show ambition and repeated attempts, not a complete record of his auditions or rejections.

How Pratt won the role of Peter Quill
According to ABC’s July 2014 report, director James Gunn was initially skeptical when Pratt was suggested for Peter Quill. Gunn later described the audition as changing his mind quickly: “I knew within 20 seconds of his audition this is absolutely the guy.” That is Gunn’s recollection as reported by ABC, rather than an independently documented account of the casting session.
Pratt’s casting joined his established comic strengths to a different kind of part. Disney’s official U.S. film page describes Quill as the leader of the Guardians, traveling as Star-Lord. The character needs to be funny, but also to hold the center of an action-adventure story. Pratt’s transition was not a rejection of comedy; it was a chance to make comic timing part of a feature-film hero’s screen presence.
The physical preparation became part of the transformation
Taking on an action-adventure lead also changed the image audiences saw onscreen. ABC reported that Pratt talked about weekly measurements during preparation, joking about how closely the production monitored his physique. The Independent likewise described a physical transformation for the role. These reports support the point that preparation was visible and discussed at the time; they do not establish a precise weight change or provide a basis for treating the anecdotes as health or training advice.

ABC called Guardians of the Galaxy Pratt’s first leading role in a feature film and described him as rising to leading-man status in the year before its July 2014 report. Disney lists the film’s U.S. release date as August 1, 2014, its rating as PG-13, and its runtime as 2 hours 1 minute; James Gunn directed, and Nicole Perlman and Gunn are credited as writers. Release dates and ratings can vary by territory, so those details refer to Disney’s U.S. listing.

Pratt’s familiar humor carried over, but now it sat alongside action, leadership and the scale of a theatrical franchise. That change in role type and project scale explains the career turning point more precisely than calling it an overnight discovery.
Pratt captured the startling change in his circumstances in an ABC interview with Chris Connelly for Nightline: “I used to be a door-to-door salesman. I lived in a van,” he said. “I’m a f—— Hollywood movie star now.” The line expresses his own sense of the leap; it is not a measurement of fame or proof that one film alone caused every role that followed.
