Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition joined Xbox Game Pass on November 11, 2021, while Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition arrived on PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021. GTA III’s announced PlayStation Now window ran through January 31, 2022.
Short answer: “Free” was shorthand for subscription access, not a permanent giveaway. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition joined Xbox Game Pass on November 11, 2021, the trilogy’s digital launch day. Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition was added to PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021, and Sony listed it as available through January 31, 2022.
Neither announcement gave players permanent ownership at no extra cost. The games were part of subscription catalogs while the relevant membership and catalog placement lasted. The full Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition remained a separately sold collection containing GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas.
What actually happened
Rockstar announced the subscription placements on October 22, 2021, alongside the trilogy’s release plans. The digital collection launched on November 11, 2021, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher.

- PlayStation Now: GTA III – The Definitive Edition joined the service on December 7, 2021.

- Paid collection: All three games were also sold together as Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
That makes the original headline misleading in two ways. First, San Andreas was not simply free to everyone; it was included for eligible Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Second, GTA III did not become free in December in a permanent-ownership sense. It was a time-limited PlayStation Now catalog addition.
Why “free” did not mean “you keep it”
Subscription access and ownership are different. With a catalog service, you can generally play an included title while your subscription is active and while the publisher and platform holder keep that title in the catalog. If the membership ends or the game leaves the catalog, access can end even if the game remains installed.
That is the important distinction in this case:
| Question | What the 2021 offers meant |
|---|---|
| Did everyone receive the games for free? | No. Access was tied to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Now. |
| Could subscribers play without buying the trilogy separately? | Yes, while the title was included in the relevant catalog and the subscription was active. |
| Did the subscription create a permanent license? | No. The announcements described catalog access, not a permanent giveaway. |
| Was the trilogy also sold as a normal product? | Yes. It was sold digitally and announced for physical console release. |
PlayStation Now is also a historical service name here. Sony later folded PlayStation Now into the broader PlayStation Plus structure, so references to GTA III being “on PlayStation Now” describe the December 2021 event rather than a current subscription listing.
Timeline of the GTA Definitive Edition subscription releases
October 22, 2021: Rockstar announces the plans
Rockstar confirmed that the trilogy would receive a digital release on November 11 and identified the two subscription placements. San Andreas was headed to Xbox Game Pass at launch, while GTA III was scheduled for PlayStation Now on December 7.
November 11, 2021: Digital launch and Xbox Game Pass access
The collection launched digitally across modern consoles and PC. Xbox Game Pass subscribers could access San Andreas – The Definitive Edition on that day. This was access to one game from the trilogy, not a free permanent copy of the entire collection.
December 7, 2021: Physical editions and GTA III on PlayStation Now
December 7 brought the planned physical console editions and the PlayStation Now addition of GTA III – The Definitive Edition. Again, the subscription placement covered GTA III, not automatically all three games.

January 31, 2022: The listed PlayStation Now window ends
Sony’s announcement specified January 31, 2022, as the end of the GTA III PlayStation Now availability window. That date is strong evidence that this was a temporary catalog promotion rather than a permanent free release.
December 2023: Mobile versions arrive through Netflix
Rockstar later announced mobile versions of all three Definitive Edition games for iOS and Android. The mobile editions were individually purchasable and were also included for Netflix users as part of their Netflix subscription. That was a separate distribution arrangement from the 2021 Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now offers.

The collection contains:
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Rockstar marketed the Definitive Editions as updated versions rather than simple ports. The package includes modernized controls inspired by Grand Theft Auto V, revised targeting and navigation, updated lighting and shadows, higher-resolution textures, upgraded character and vehicle models, and increased draw distances.
Platform-specific additions were also announced. The Nintendo Switch version included gyro aiming and touchscreen controls. On PC, the launch version supported NVIDIA DLSS. These features do not change the subscription-versus-ownership distinction, but they can matter when deciding which version to play.
Where the trilogy was released
The digital release covered PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher. Physical editions were announced for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
If you prefer a copy that is not dependent on a subscription catalog, the relevant product is the complete trilogy rather than a separately announced boxed version of GTA III. For example, readers comparing ownership options can look for the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Nintendo Switch physical edition. A physical copy is a purchase of the collection; it is not required to use the historical Xbox Game Pass or Netflix access, and it should not be described as a current replacement for the old PlayStation Now offer.
Is GTA San Andreas: The Definitive Edition free now?
The verified information here establishes the historical Xbox Game Pass launch placement, not a current catalog listing. Game Pass availability can change by region, subscription tier, licensing agreement, and date. The same caution applies to the modern PlayStation Plus catalog and Netflix’s mobile-game offering.

Therefore, the accurate answer is:
- Historically: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition was included with Xbox Game Pass from November 11, 2021.
- Historically: GTA III – The Definitive Edition was included with PlayStation Now from December 7, 2021, through the announced January 31, 2022 window.
- Currently: Do not assume either 2021 catalog placement is still active without checking the relevant regional platform catalog immediately before subscribing or downloading.
Can you still play GTA III for free through PlayStation Now?
Not under the original PlayStation Now announcement. That offer had a stated end date of January 31, 2022, and PlayStation Now has since been integrated into PlayStation Plus. Any later availability would need to be verified as a new PlayStation Plus catalog decision, not treated as a continuation of the 2021 promotion.
The bottom line on the original headline
GTA San Andreas – The Definitive Edition was included with Xbox Game Pass at the trilogy’s November 2021 launch, and GTA III – The Definitive Edition joined PlayStation Now in December 2021. Calling them “free” is acceptable only as shorthand for temporary access included with a paid subscription. It is inaccurate if it suggests that players received permanent ownership or that the offers remain active today.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. San Andreas was included with Xbox Game Pass from November 11, 2021. That provided subscription access while the membership and catalog placement lasted; it did not grant permanent ownership.
When was GTA III free on PlayStation?
GTA III joined PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021, and Sony listed it as available until January 31, 2022. PlayStation Now was later folded into PlayStation Plus, so that announcement is historical rather than proof of current availability.
What games are in GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition?
The collection includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It was sold as a paid digital and physical collection in addition to the temporary subscription placements.
Can you buy a physical copy of the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy?

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: San Andreas was a launch-day Xbox Game Pass inclusion in November 2021; GTA III was a time-limited PlayStation Now inclusion beginning December 7, 2021. Neither was a permanent free giveaway, and current availability requires a fresh regional catalog check.
