The example below is a video-only test—not a production-ready 24/7 service. Before running it continuously, add an audio branch if needed, confirm the installed elements and secure ingest URL, and test that the VPS can sustain both the encoding load and outbound bitrate.
Install GStreamer on Ubuntu or Debian
Start with the command-line tools and the plugin families that supply the pipeline elements. These are package-name examples for apt-based distributions; exact availability can vary by release and repository configuration.

Check the actual VPS rather than assuming every element is installed or has identical properties on every release:

Build and test the video pipeline
This illustrative command sends generated test video. It helps check that the video path, muxer, and RTMPS sink work, but it is not a tested production command and does not include audio.

rtmpsink location="<RTMPS_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"Replace the test source with the live or looping media source you intend to use. Confirm the URL form and installed sink behavior on the VPS. In x264enc, bitrate is in kbit/s: the example sets 6,000 kbit/s, a plausible starting point for 720p30. At 30 frames per second, key-int-max=60 sets a maximum interval of 60 frames, or two seconds. Verify negotiated caps and element properties on the installed GStreamer version.

What each element does
gst-launch-1.0runs the pipeline from the command line.videotestsrc is-live=truecreates live test video; replace it for actual content.videoconvertconverts raw video to a format the next element can accept.x264encencodes raw video as H.264. Encoding uses CPU, and the settings affect latency and resource use.h264parseparses and normalizes the encoded H.264 stream before muxing.flvmux streamable=truemuxes the stream into FLV for streaming.rtmpsinksends the output to the RTMP-compatible endpoint over a secure connection when configured for RTMPS.

Add audio when the program needs it
A video-only pipeline produces no program audio. For content with sound, add an audio source, encode it to AAC with an encoder available on the VPS, and connect its encoded output as a second input to flvmux. Inspect the encoder and its properties locally; the exact element and package can vary by distribution. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 for audio and recommends 128 kbps for stereo AAC/MP3. For 5.1 audio, YouTube specifies 48 kHz and 384 kbps and requires AAC over RTMP(S). Do not leave a silent or disconnected audio branch in a production pipeline.
Choose settings YouTube and the VPS can sustain
YouTube recommends a resolution-specific bitrate and advises choosing settings that are reliable on the available connection. Its current encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. For H.264, its recommendations include:

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measures of what a particular VPS can encode or deliver. For other resolutions and frame rates, use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table rather than extrapolating. The same guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and SDR recommendations including progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, two B-frames, and one reference frame. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewer formats.

At YouTube’s recommended 720p30 H.264 video bitrate, video alone uses 6 Mbps of continuous outbound capacity. Audio and transport overhead add to that. The VPS must also encode roughly 30 frames per second without accumulating an ever-growing processing backlog. A bitrate recommendation is not a VPS sizing guarantee.
Configure YouTube RTMPS and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown for your stream.
- Use the RTMPS URL in the sink location, with the key in the form expected by the endpoint and installed sink. Confirm the URL format against the control room and GStreamer version.
- Keep the key secret. Do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or a public repository. Use an appropriately restricted configuration or secret-handling method for the service that launches the pipeline.
- Start a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it continuously.
YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Its RTMPS instructions explain where to find the secure URL and key. YouTube notes that an SSL error can occur if you use rtmp instead of rtmps; check the URL and port 443 if the secure connection fails.
Check a VPS before committing to 24/7 operation
There is no universal minimum vCPU count or network plan established for this pipeline. Provider capacity, CPU throttling, sustained outbound throughput, data transfer rules, and fees are plan-specific. Check the provider’s current documentation and terms before choosing a low-cost VPS in India.
- Outbound capacity and egress: Confirm sustained upload capacity and whether data transfer is limited, metered, or charged separately. A momentary speed test alone does not demonstrate continuous capacity.
- CPU behavior: Check available vCPUs and any throttling or shared-resource policy. Run the intended resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings to see whether the VPS keeps up.
- Region and terms: Verify the actual data-center location, restart behavior, and service terms for the specific plan. Do not assume every low-cost plan has an India region or permits the intended workload.
- Recovery and monitoring: A foreground
gst-launch-1.0session alone does not supervise itself. Arrange process supervision, alerting, and a restart path, then monitor CPU, dropped frames, pipeline errors, and YouTube stream health.
Run a representative test with similar motion and audio to the final content. YouTube’s encoder guidance advises testing before going live and checking upload bitrate and stream health. No VPS plan or configuration can be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube availability.

Troubleshooting common failures
An element is missing
If gst-launch-1.0 reports that an element is unavailable, inspect it with gst-inspect-1.0 ELEMENT. Install or enable the distribution package that provides it, then confirm the element exists on that release. Check the plugin mapping above; do not assume the package set is identical across Ubuntu and Debian versions.
The RTMPS connection fails or reports an SSL error
Recheck that the endpoint begins with the secure RTMPS form supplied by Live Control Room, not plain RTMP, and that the URL and port 443 are correct. Confirm the sink and its underlying library support the required secure connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guide identifies use of rtmp instead of rtmps as a possible cause of SSL errors.
YouTube reports unstable stream health
Check the actual outgoing bitrate, encoder load, and packet or pipeline errors. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the VPS cannot maintain the chosen settings, and test again with representative content. Compare against YouTube’s resolution-specific table instead of choosing a bitrate by guesswork.
The video works but the stream has no sound
Confirm that an audio source feeds a working encoder, that the encoder output is connected to flvmux, and that the selected audio format and bitrate match YouTube’s guidance. A video-only test pipeline is silent by design.

The process stops after disconnect or reboot
A terminal command is not a 24/7 process manager. Configure a supervisor to start the pipeline on boot, detect failure, and restart it; add monitoring so a repeated failure is visible. Validate that restart behavior does not leak or expose the stream key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can GStreamer stream to YouTube from a VPS without a desktop session?
Yes. A command-line pipeline can run on a headless Ubuntu or Debian VPS; continuous operation still needs process supervision and monitoring.
Does the example pipeline loop a video file?
No. It generates test video with videotestsrc. A file-based looping source requires a different source and loop design.
