Grotesquerie centers on detective Lois Tryon, played by Niecy Nash-Betts, and Sister Megan Duval, played by Micaela Diamond, as they investigate disturbing crimes. FX’s official cast guide also identifies five other central characters connected to Lois’s family, the hospital, and Megan’s world.
Who is in the central cast of Grotesquerie?
FX lists these seven actor-character pairings on its official cast page. The entries form a guide to the central cast; FX does not present them as a complete roster of every guest or recurring performer in the season.
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Niecy Nash-Betts | Lois Tryon | Lead detective investigating what FX calls the most disturbing case of her career. |
| Courtney B. Vance | Marshall Tryon | Lois’s husband, a professor in long-term medical care. |
| Lesley Manville | Nurse Redd | A hard-nosed nurse assigned to Marshall’s care. |
| Micaela Diamond | Sister Megan Duval | A nun and Catholic Guardian journalist who helps Lois investigate. |
| Nicholas Alexander Chavez | Father Charlie Mayhew | A young, forward-thinking priest whose eyes are opened by Megan’s journalism. |
| Raven Goodwin | Merritt Tryon | The loving, clever daughter of Lois and Marshall. |
| Travis Kelce | Ed Laclan | A gentle, quick-witted, charming orderly at the hospital where Marshall is a patient. |
The character name “Ed Laclan” is the spelling used on FX’s cast page. FX’s series overview names Kelce among the stars but does not give his character’s name.
How do the characters connect to the mystery?
Lois and Sister Megan lead the investigation
FX’s series overview describes a small community unsettled by heinous crimes that feel eerily personal to Lois. With no leads, Lois accepts help from Megan, whose work as a journalist for the Catholic Guardian brings her into the investigation. The official synopsis says the pair connect clues and are drawn into a sinister web that raises further questions.

The Tryon family and hospital broaden the story
Lois’s home life is part of the setup: FX describes her relationship with her daughter as strained and her husband as receiving long-term hospital care. Nurse Redd and orderly Ed Laclan are tied to Marshall’s care, while Merritt is Lois and Marshall’s daughter. FX describes Nurse Redd as unusually focused on patients’ wellbeing in relation to their loved ones.
Father Charlie’s connection is through Megan
FX describes Father Charlie as a young, forward-thinking priest whose perspective is opened by Megan’s journalism. The official character description does not identify him as part of Lois’s investigation.
