Spoilers ahead: Mika leaves Grey Sloan, Jackie dies after a difficult operation, and Jo and Lucas are caught in a robbery that ends with a gunshot. The episode does not reveal who was shot.
What happens in “Drop It Like It’s Hot”?
Season 21, Episode 8 begins about six weeks after the previous episode. A deadly heat wave sends patients flooding into Grey Sloan, but the episode’s biggest turns are personal: Mika Yasuda cannot return to work after her sister’s death, a young athlete does not survive surgery, and a routine errand leaves Jo and Lucas in immediate danger.
Does Mika leave Grey Sloan?
Yes. Mika returns to work after her sister Chloe’s death, but the hospital keeps bringing her loss back to the surface. During a patient emergency, she breaks down and lashes out at Bailey. Later, she asks Jules to help her feel normal, then tells Bailey she does not think she can continue working at Grey Sloan.
Mika packs her locker and says goodbye to Jules before leaving. Her departure is the episode’s central emotional arc: returning to work has not made her grief manageable, and she chooses to step away.

What happens to Jackie during Amelia and Winston’s surgery?
Amelia and Winston operate on Jackie, a young basketball player with multiple aneurysms threatening her future. They manage to remove even a particularly difficult aneurysm, but Jackie does not survive when they try to restart her heart.
The case also brings Winston face-to-face with Skye, Jackie’s mother. Winston had previously ghosted her, making an already difficult medical outcome personally complicated.
Who gets shot: Jo or Lucas?
The episode does not answer that question. During the heat-wave crisis, Teddy puts Ben in charge of emergency-room overflow. Ben sends Jo and Lucas to a convenience store for ice for patients. They find one remaining bag just as a robber pulls a gun on cashier Gladys and demands the safe.
Jo notices that Gladys is bleeding. Gladys swings a baseball bat at the robber, Lucas intervenes, and a struggle follows. A gun fires, and the episode cuts away without showing whether Jo, Lucas, Gladys, or the robber was hit. The next episode, “Hit the Floor,” picks up the aftermath of the convenience-store shooting, confirming that this is an intentional cliffhanger—not an outcome revealed in Episode 8.

Cass and Owen clear the air while helping with the hospital crisis. Later, Owen sees Cass touch Teddy’s arm and appears unsettled. When Nora’s car breaks down, he offers her a ride to her hotel. Those moments leave the relationship dynamics open; the episode does not establish a settled outcome.
