Rep. Richard Hudson confirmed the deaths
Rep. Richard Hudson publicly confirmed that Greg Biffle, Cristina Grossu Biffle and their two children were among those killed in the North Carolina plane crash. A contemporaneous statement entered into the Congressional Record also described the deaths of Biffle, his wife and their two children.
That confirmation establishes who was aboard and died; it should not be confused with a congressional finding about what caused the crash. The accident investigation remains the responsibility of the National Transportation Safety Board.

What happened at Statesville Regional Airport
The aircraft was a Cessna Citation 550 business jet registered as N257BW. According to the NTSB’s preliminary information, the pilot and all six passengers suffered fatal injuries. NASCAR reported that the aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. Eastern time on December 18, 2025.
The NTSB described the event as a crash on landing. Investigators said the aircraft had departed from Statesville Regional Airport and was returning to land shortly afterward. The agency announced that its investigators were traveling to North Carolina on the day of the crash to begin examining the wreckage and circumstances of the flight.
The flight was operated under Part 91, the category generally used for personal and other noncommercial operations. That classification identifies the operating rules; it does not, by itself, explain why the crash occurred.

The seven people killed
NASCAR identified all seven victims. They were:
- Greg Biffle, the former NASCAR driver;
- Cristina Grossu Biffle, Biffle’s wife;
- Ryder Biffle, their 5-year-old son;
- Emma Biffle, Biffle’s 14-year-old daughter;
- Dennis Dutton, the pilot;
- Jack Dutton, Dutton’s son; and
- Craig Wadsworth.
The ages of Ryder and Emma were reported by The Associated Press. The victims’ names were also independently reported by AP and formally identified by NASCAR.
The cause has not been established
The NTSB investigation is ongoing. Its preliminary report records the aircraft type, registration and fatality count, but a preliminary report is not a final explanation of an accident. The agency’s case information states that a probable cause will be addressed in a final report.
Early reporting said investigators were examining why the jet returned toward the airport shortly after takeoff. AP also reported that, at the initial briefing, investigators had not identified an emergency call from the aircraft. That does not establish that no emergency occurred or explain why the aircraft turned back.

At this stage, there is no verified basis for saying that weather, pilot action, mechanical failure, flight-control problems or the position of anyone in the cockpit caused the crash. Those possibilities should not be presented as findings unless the NTSB later publishes an explicit update or final determination.
Greg Biffle’s NASCAR legacy
Biffle was one of the most accomplished drivers to move through NASCAR’s national series. NASCAR’s official biography says he won the 2000 Craftsman Truck Series championship and the 2002 Xfinity Series championship, making him the first driver to win championships in both series.

In the Cup Series, Biffle recorded 19 victories in 515 starts and won 13 poles. He finished among the top 10 in the championship standings six times and was recognized as one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers. Those achievements made him a significant figure across multiple eras of the sport, not only a successful Cup Series competitor.
That racing legacy is part of the public response to his death, but the immediate story remains the loss of seven people and the investigation into the Statesville crash.
