Carnation said the rhyme had once been submitted to a company-sponsored contest, though it was never chosen for an advertising campaign. The company supported Helen and her family, then released merchandise intended to help fund sidewalk repairs. People reported that the sidewalk had been fixed by December 29, 2023.
Who was Grandma Helen?
Helen Ernst lived in Bloomfield, Iowa, and was 96 when her family’s video of her reciting the old rhyme drew attention in late 2023. Her daughter, Allison Wroe, posted the video. In an interview with People, Helen recalled her daughters’ reaction: “I don’t swear and it just shocked them to death.”
Was the Carnation rhyme a real jingle?
It was a remembered rhyme, not an official Carnation advertising jingle selected for a campaign. Carnation told Inside Edition that the rhyme came from a real submission to a company-sponsored contest in the 1940s, but was not selected for advertising. The Des Moines Register report syndicated by Yahoo dates the entry to 1946 and says its writer received $1,000 after it was declined.
That history is based on Carnation’s later account as reported in 2023; the available reporting does not include an original contest entry or company archive. Helen told Inside Edition, “And, oh my goodness, I remember that clear through now all these years.”
How did Carnation respond?
As reported by the Des Moines Register in 2023, Carnation gave Helen $5,000 and helped her family, including holiday support and flying in a granddaughter for Thanksgiving. The company later released Grandma Helen merchandise, with proceeds intended to help pay for sidewalk repairs. Carnation brand manager Meghan Bhatia described the rhyme to People as “part of the Carnation lore.”
Was Helen’s sidewalk repaired?
People reported on December 29, 2023 that the sidewalk had been repaired. The publication quoted Helen saying she could walk to the beauty shop and drug store without worrying about tripping and falling. That report establishes the outcome as described at the time; it does not confirm the sidewalk’s present-day condition or whether the merchandise fundraiser is still active.
