For the 2026 Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy added Best Traditional Country Album, renamed the existing Best Country Album category Best Contemporary Country Album, and created a limited Best New Artist eligibility exception for some artists previously nominated in Album of the Year. The 68th Grammy Awards took place on February 1, 2026, so these were changes for a completed awards cycle.
What was the new country album Grammy category?
The new category was Best Traditional Country Album. The existing Best Country Album category was not eliminated; it was renamed Best Contemporary Country Album. The Recording Academy described the changes in its June 12, 2025 announcement.
How the two country album categories differ
Best Traditional Country Album
The Academy says this category recognizes traditional country albums, vocal or instrumental. Its description points to traditional sound structures, rhythm and singing style, lyrical content, and instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano and live drums. It also names western, western swing and outlaw country. To be nominated as an artist in the category, an artist must account for more than 50 percent of the album’s playing time, according to the Academy’s Award Update Center.
Best Contemporary Country Album
This renamed category recognizes contemporary country recordings, vocal or instrumental. The Academy’s description considers style, song structure, lyrics and/or presentation as they reflect the broad spectrum of contemporary country style and culture.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These descriptions are the Academy’s stated criteria, not a rigid genre checklist. They give the categories distinct musical framing, but do not establish how voters will classify every album that blends traditional and contemporary elements.
What changed in Best New Artist eligibility?
The 2026 rule expansion created a specific route for an artist who had previously been nominated in Album of the Year but contributed less than 20 percent of the playing time on that nominated album. The Academy said this could allow featured artists on another artist’s Album of the Year-nominated project to be considered for Best New Artist. It does not make every performer with a previous nomination eligible.

The Academy’s Best New Artist eligibility explainer also describes baseline requirements: at least five singles or tracks, or one album, and a limit of three previous Best New Artist submissions. It says a prior performer nomination generally disqualifies an artist, with exceptions for certain featured artists or collaborators. Because that explainer includes older background rules, artists assessing a particular entry should consult the rules that apply to that award year.
When did the changes apply?
The Academy set the 68th Awards’ recording eligibility period as August 31, 2024 through August 30, 2025. Nominees were announced November 7, 2025, and the ceremony was held February 1, 2026, according to the Academy’s announcement. The cycle is complete: the Academy’s Best New Artist winners and nominees record lists Olivia Dean as the 2026 winner.
