What the major categories recognize
- Record of the Year
- Recognizes the recorded performance and its production, including eligible recording contributors.
- Album of the Year
- Recognizes an album and its qualifying artists and contributors under Grammy category rules.
- Song of the Year
- Recognizes the songwriters. The performing artist is shown separately because the award is for composition.
- Best New Artist
- Recognizes an artist whose public identity and breakthrough occurred during the relevant Grammy eligibility period.
A songwriter, producer, featured performer, mixer, video director, art director, or classical conductor is therefore not interchangeable with the headline recording artist when counting nominations or determining who is eligible for an award.
Notable nomination stories
- Beyoncé led with 11 nominations. She received her first nominations in the Country & American Roots Music field, including recognition for “16 CARRIAGES,” “II MOST WANTED,” “TEXAS HOLD ’EM,” COWBOY CARTER, and “YA YA.”

- Post Malone also received his first Country & American Roots Music field nominations.
- The Beatles returned to the Grammy nominations with “Now and Then,” their first nomination in 28 years.

Most Grammy categories generally have five nominees, but the list is not uniform. The four artist-facing General Field categories had eight nominees in 2025, while Producer of the Year, Non-Classical and Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical had five. Other categories can contain six or seven entries under the Academy’s rules, so a complete list should reproduce the official number rather than force every category into a five-nominee format.

- Best Remixed Recording moved from the Production, Engineering, Composition & Arrangement field to Pop & Dance/Electronic.
- Best Dance/Electronic Music Album became Best Dance/Electronic Album, with at least 50% of the album required to consist of Dance/Electronic recordings.
- Featured artists contributing less than half of an album’s playing time became eligible for a Winners’ Certificate in genre album categories, subject to exceptions including Musical Theater, General Field, and Craft categories.
- The Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical submission threshold changed from five songs to four when the songwriter was not also a primary or featured artist or producer.
