An unnamed Benedictine College graduate said she and her roommate booed during Harrison Butker’s May 11, 2024 commencement address, and that hearing the speech made graduation feel less special. Her account, reported by Yahoo Entertainment from a TikTok video, describes one student’s experience—not the reaction of the whole class.
What the graduate said about hearing the speech
In a May 16, 2024 report, Yahoo Entertainment’s Kelly Coffey-Behrens described the woman as a graphic-design graduate who planned to work for a nationwide magazine. The article did not name her. It attributed her comments to a TikTok video; the video itself is not independently established here, so her remarks should be understood as Yahoo’s account of what she said.
Yahoo reported that she and her roommate booed. The graduate said the speech had “made graduation feel a little less special knowing [she] had to sit through that and get told ‘I’m nothing but a homemaker.’” The brackets are Yahoo’s editorial substitution in the quoted wording.

In the published address transcript, Butker described his wife’s decision to embrace homemaking as central to his own success: “I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: Homemaker.” The transcript also records remarks directed to women graduates about careers, marriage, and children. How the audience reaction was described
The graduate’s account is distinct from reporting about the room as a whole. The Associated Press reported that video of the ceremony showed virtually all graduates and spectators standing for a standing ovation, while interviews with students reflected a more mixed response. Neither description establishes how every person reacted. Associated Press coverage of the speech and student reactions
