Built earlier by the Moore family, the Memphis mansion is now both a house museum and a National Register-listed place recognized for its association with Presley.
When did Elvis buy Graceland, and how long did he live there?
The Moore family built Graceland in 1939 and named it for Grace Toof, the original landowner. Elvis bought the property on March 25, 1957, paying $102,500 for the house and 13.8 acres, according to Graceland’s official FAQ. His parents, Vernon and Gladys, had seen the property first and placed a $1,000 down payment on March 16.
The family moved in on May 16 while Elvis was filming Jailhouse Rock; Elvis spent his first night at the house on June 26. He lived at Graceland until his death in 1977. The house opened to visitors in 1982. Its National Register listing followed on November 7, 1991—an important distinction between the beginning of public tours and formal historic recognition.
What kind of house is Graceland?
The National Park Service classifies Graceland as a Classical Revival house. Presley made alterations and additions during his occupancy, so the mansion visitors encounter reflects both the original house and changes made over time.

Graceland’s official FAQ gives the house’s size as 10,266 square feet when Elvis bought it and 17,552 square feet today. Those figures describe different points in the building’s history, not competing measurements of a single unchanged house. The FAQ also notes five sets of stairs, three fireplaces, and a kidney-shaped pool.
What is included in the Graceland mansion tour?
The operator’s current mansion-tour description lists the living room, his parents’ bedroom, kitchen, TV room, pool room, Jungle Room, his father’s office, Trophy Building, Racquetball Building, and Meditation Garden as stops. The tour is described as an interactive iPad experience hosted by John Stamos, with commentary and stories from Elvis and Lisa Marie Presley. This is the published tour itinerary, not a guarantee that every room or interior space is accessible on every visit. Check the official mansion page for current details.
The Meditation Garden is also the burial place of Elvis and family members, according to the Associated Press. The NPS nomination describes Graceland’s significance through its association with Presley and calls it an enduring cultural symbol. It states: “Graceland, whose name has become synonymous with the history of rock and roll, was a vital part of Elvis Presley’s life and remains an enduring cultural symbol in America.”
How to plan a visit

Graceland’s importance is not simply that a famous musician lived there. Its rooms, grounds, and preserved associations offer a tangible setting for understanding Presley’s private and public life. The National Register nomination documented an estimated 500,000–600,000 visitors per year in its 1991-era discussion; that is a historical estimate, not a current attendance figure.
For a documentary-minded visitor, the mansion is best understood as a preserved home whose story spans several layers: a 1939 family house, Presley’s residence and alterations, and a public museum shaped by his continuing cultural legacy.
