John Simm is the premiere’s anchor: his understated, weathered portrayal gives the investigation a human centre, while the episode’s familiar mix of procedural work and personal history makes this a confident return rather than a reinvention.
What happens in the Grace Series 4 premiere?
In ITV’s synopsis, a vicious robbery at a secluded Brighton home draws Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and DS Glenn Branson into a case involving stolen antiques, old grudges and questions pursued by Gavin Daly. The homeowner is left fighting for her life. The apparent target is a sentimental object connected to a mystery involving her brother and their father. That premise gives the hour a useful double focus: the practical work of identifying what was taken and why, and the older family history that makes the crime more than a straightforward theft.
The case is self-contained enough to welcome viewers back into the series, but it also sits within a continuing story about Grace and the people around him. Brighton remains more than a backdrop; its homes and streets lend the investigation a particular local texture. The episode’s strength is that it keeps the crime at the centre while allowing the returning characters to carry emotional weight. It offers intrigue without requiring the premiere to become a recap of everything that came before.
John Simm returns as Roy Grace
Simm’s performance is the clearest reason the premiere feels assured. He plays Grace with restraint rather than turning every reaction into a display of anguish or authority. That measured quality suits a detective who has to absorb grim details, listen closely and keep moving. In scenes with Branson and the team, Simm makes Grace’s attention feel active: the character is not simply waiting for the next clue, but weighing what people say and what they leave unsaid.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The result is a strong continuation of the role, not a claim that the character has been fundamentally transformed. Simm gives the procedural scenes their centre of gravity and lends the family mystery a seriousness that helps the episode hold together. That is what “top form” means here: a controlled, dependable lead performance that makes the case involving feel worthwhile.
A returning ensemble and a clear production shape
Richie Campbell is back as DS Glenn Branson, with Zoë Tapper as Cleo Morey, Craig Parkinson as DS Norman Potting, Laura Elphinstone as DS Bella Moy, Brad Morrison as DC Nick Nicholl and Sam Hoare as ACC Cassian Pewe also among the returning cast. Robert Glenister joins Series 4. Their presence gives the premiere the continuity of an established ensemble, while keeping Grace and Branson at the centre of this investigation.

Ed Whitmore wrote the episode and Brian Kelly directed it, according to ITV. The premiere begins a four-film season, a format that gives each instalment room for a feature-length case without making this opener responsible for resolving the whole series.
How the episode connects to Peter James’s novel
Dead Man’s Time adapts Peter James’s Roy Grace novel of the same name. ITV describes Series 4 as based on James’s novels; Tall Story Pictures identifies the other adaptations in the season as Want You Dead, You Are Dead and Love You Dead. The connection offers book readers a useful point of comparison, but the available episode information establishes the adaptation relationship, not scene-by-scene fidelity. It is best approached as a screen version in its own right rather than assumed to reproduce every detail of the novel.

When it premiered and what the audience figures mean
The UK premiere was announced for Sunday 1 September 2024 at 8 p.m. on ITV and ITVX, with ITV’s programme listing placing it on ITV1 in Week 36 of that year. Those are historical broadcast details, not confirmation of current streaming availability; access can vary by territory and date.
In its May 2023 Series 4 production announcement, ITV said Series 3 averaged over 5.6 million viewers per episode, with the first episode consolidating at 6.7 million. Those figures belong to Series 3, not this premiere. They provide context for the programme’s earlier audience, but should not be read as a Series 4 rating.
