The program also mentions estimates around $100 million without establishing them as audited figures.
What was Grace Kelly’s net worth?
The most defensible answer is that it is unknown. PBS’s investigation estimates her wealth at more than $57.5 million in today’s money, drawing on evidence about earnings, inheritance, property, clothing and jewelry. The figure is not an official estate accounting, and the program’s page does not state the publication year or the valuation method, inflation index or precise date used for its conversion. PBS’s program page also notes that some estimates put her wealth around $100 million, but does not identify a specific estimator or document that number as an audited total.
The distinction matters: a present-value estimate is not the same thing as the amount recorded in an estate inventory at the time of death. PBS reports that the palace declined to disclose a third will, leaving key evidence unavailable. No single figure in the documentary should therefore be presented as a confirmed probate value.

Why her wealth is difficult to pin down
Her inheritance and dowry are not a simple addition
PBS traces part of the financial story to Jack Kelly’s estate. The documentary describes Grace’s calculated portion, then says she effectively surrendered it as part of her dowry. That means the inheritance figure cannot simply be added to an estimate of her later wealth without accounting for how it was used.

Personal assets and royal assets are different categories
Kelly’s marriage to Prince Rainier III made her Princess of Monaco, but that does not make the Grimaldi family’s or royal household’s property her personal wealth. The documentary discusses family property, clothes and jewels; the available material does not establish that every item associated with the royal household belonged to Kelly individually.
A missing will leaves evidence unresolved
PBS reports that a third will was not disclosed by the palace. Without that document and a complete public inventory, it is not possible to verify the composition or total value of Kelly’s estate from the figures cited by the program.

How her career shaped the question
Kelly began acting in 1950 and became known for films including Mogambo, High Noon, The Country Girl, High Society, Rear Window, Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief. The Princess Grace Foundation-USA says she retired from acting at 26 to marry Rainier in 1956 and take up royal duties. She died in 1982 at age 52 after injuries in a traffic collision. The Foundation’s biography provides that career and life timeline.
Her acting income ended when she left Hollywood, while the later financial picture involved inheritance, property and assets held in different contexts. These circumstances help explain why estimates vary, but they do not establish an exact total.

Do later licensing revenues count as her net worth?
No. The Princess Grace Foundation-USA says it holds exclusive rights and facilitates licensing of Kelly’s name and likeness. Revenue connected to later licensing can benefit the Foundation; it should not be treated as money Kelly personally owned at death. The Foundation’s licensing information describes its role.

How to read claims about Grace Kelly’s fortune
- Check whether a figure is a nominal amount at the time or a later “today’s money” conversion.
- Look for whether the estimate covers documented personal assets, or also includes inferred property, jewelry, clothing or family wealth.
- Distinguish a named documentary reconstruction from an official estate account or an unattributed estimate.
- Do not add royal-household or Grimaldi family assets to Kelly’s personal net worth without evidence that they were hers.
