Gorakh Pandey (1945–1989) was a Hindi and Bhojpuri poet whose songs brought political criticism into the language and rhythms of folk life. His writing addressed peasant and working-class struggles, class power, exploitation and communal violence. A 1989 obituary reported that peasants sang his Bhojpuri songs; a later profile says his verses continue to appear at protests and poetry gatherings. Those are accounts of his reception, not measurements of how widely his work circulated.
Who was Gorakh Pandey?
Pandey was born in 1945 in Deoria (also rendered Devariya), Uttar Pradesh, and became known for poetry and songs in both Hindi and Bhojpuri. His work connected literary writing to the lives of rural people, particularly peasants, and to political struggles of the 1970s. J.P. Dixit’s near-contemporaneous obituary places him in a progressive Hindi literary tradition and describes his songs as part of a wider revolutionary culture. Saudamini Deo’s 2019 profile discusses influences from Naxal and farmers’ movements, as well as his opposition to the feudal background of his family and to the bourgeois Hindi literary circle.
These accounts make “people’s poet” more than a label for his politics: the language and performance of the work mattered. Dixit wrote that Pandey used Bhojpuri folk idiom and lyricism to reach a peasant audience, and reported that peasants sang the songs. He also described Jan Sanskriti Manch as a writers’ and artists’ forum intended to remain unaffiliated with a political party; that description is Dixit’s account of the organization.
What did he write about?
Pandey’s poems and songs confront exploitation, class power and political hypocrisy. They also address communal violence and the possibility of resistance. The themes are best approached through individual works rather than reducing the writing to a single political slogan: for example, catalogue listings identify “Inqilab ka Geet,” “Samajvad” and “Samay ka Pahiya,” but titles alone do not establish what every poem argues.

Deo reproduces a diary passage attributed to Pandey and framed as writing from the mid-1970s: “poetry and love – these are two places where I feel fully human.” The passage continues, “This is why I write poetry only for the working class and its allies.” Because the words are presented through Deo’s 2019 article rather than an independently inspected manuscript, they should be read with that attribution in mind. The passage offers a glimpse of how the article presents his idea of poetry: personal feeling and political commitment were not opposites.
How did folk language shape his politics?
Bhojpuri allowed Pandey to write in a language associated with the rural communities whose lives his songs addressed. In Dixit’s 1989 obituary, folk idiom is not merely decorative: it is part of how the songs could be sung and shared. Dixit praised their combination of lyricism and political critique, writing that Pandey’s “folk songs have given him a special place among modern revolutionary poets.” That is the critic’s assessment, not a line by Pandey.

Deo’s later profile reports that verses still surface at protests and poetry gatherings; this is a qualitative observation, not a count of present-day readership.
Which books and poems did Gorakh Pandey write?
Accounts published at different times name different parts of Pandey’s bibliography. Dixit’s February 1989 obituary names two collections available at that time; Deo’s 2019 profile lists four Hindi collections and one Bhojpuri collection, noting that three of the four Hindi collections were published posthumously. Hindi Samay also lists ideological prose and a broader set of poems.

Work titles and collection lists help readers identify what to seek, but they do not substitute for a text or a named translation when interpreting a particular poem. A useful starting point is to compare a Bhojpuri song with a Hindi poem, then notice how language, form and subject change the way a political argument is made.
What is known about his death?
Pandey died in Delhi in January 1989. The precise day is not consistent across the available accounts: Hindwi gives 29 January, as does Dixit’s obituary, while Scroll’s 2019 profile reports 28 January and says he died by suicide at JNU’s Jhelum hostel. Since the sources disagree, the day should not be presented as settled.

Deo’s profile says Pandey underwent electroconvulsive therapy without consent and that his suicide note referred to worsening mental health. These are claims reported in that retrospective article; they do not establish a definitive medical explanation or cause of his death. Dixit’s obituary also offers an interpretation of the circumstances, which should be understood as the author’s view rather than established causation.
