Google launched it on April 26, 2019, around Avengers: Endgame; today, the playable version is an unofficial recreation, not a live Google feature.
What happened when you searched Google for Thanos?
In 2019, searching Google for “Thanos” could show a golden Infinity Gauntlet in the knowledge panel. Clicking or tapping it triggered a snap sound and a dust-like animation: roughly half the displayed search results vanished, and the result count fell. Clicking the gauntlet again restored the page, according to contemporary coverage and the current recreation’s description. (MobileSyrup; Time; elgooG)
The disappearing results appeared to be selected at random, but contemporary reporting did not establish a verified selection method. The effect was a playful change to the search-results page, not a change to Google’s underlying index.
Why did the Easter egg reference Thanos?
The gag translated a major moment from Avengers: Infinity War into a Google Search interaction. In the film, Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet to erase half of all life. Google applied the idea to the results on screen: they disappeared from the page rather than from the universe.

This was a promotional Search feature tied to Avengers: Endgame, released around the film’s launch—not an Easter egg hidden inside the movie. CBS News covered the tie-in. Spoiler note: the reference draws on the ending of Infinity War.
How did the original Google version work?
- Open Google Search and search for “Thanos.”
- Find the golden Infinity Gauntlet in the knowledge panel.
- Click or tap it to start the snap animation.

Those are the historical instructions for the 2019 version. The feature rolled out in stages: MobileSyrup reported that it was only reaching Canada at the time of its April 26, 2019 report. The available coverage does not establish a complete country-by-country rollout, and behavior could vary by device or region.

Does the Thanos snap still work on Google?
No. The original Google Search feature has been retired, so searching for “Thanos” in Google should not be expected to bring up the gauntlet. elgooG says Google retired the tie-in in 2020; the available reporting does not include a Google announcement confirming that exact retirement date.
Where to try a recreation
elgooG hosts an unofficial restoration. Open its Thanos page and use the recreated gauntlet to trigger the effect; click it again to restore the page. elgooG says its version recreates the animation, sound, result-count change, and restore action. That is elgooG’s implementation, not a reactivation by Google. As with other websites, sound may depend on device settings, browser permissions, or autoplay restrictions.

Did Google delete half the internet?
No. The animation temporarily hid roughly half of the results displayed on the page; it did not permanently delete websites or remove half of Google’s index. The contemporary reports describe an approximate visual effect, not a mathematically exact deletion. (MobileSyrup; Time)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What made the search gag memorable?
The feature made a familiar film image interactive with only a few elements: the recognizable gauntlet, a snap sound, disappearing results, and a way to reverse the effect. It let fans play out the premise on the search page without suggesting that anything had happened to the web itself.
