Google did not own the U.S. Olympic broadcast rights for Paris 2024. Instead, it combined several products: Google TV organized Olympic programming, YouTube TV carried NBCUniversal’s U.S. live channels for subscribers, ordinary YouTube hosted official clips and selected livestreams, and Gemini helped with explanations and promotional segments. The Paris Olympic Games ran from July 26 through August 11, 2024, so these arrangements are now historical rather than a current live offering.
NBCUniversal supplied the principal U.S. coverage. Google’s role was discovery, aggregation, streaming-platform access and product integration around the Games.
Which Google product did what?
| Product | Role during Paris 2024 |
|---|---|
| Google TV | An Olympics hub in the For You tab for finding live events, highlights, interviews and behind-the-scenes videos from official sources |
| YouTube TV | A paid U.S. live-TV service carrying NBCUniversal’s Olympic channels |
| YouTube | Official clips, highlights, replays, commentary and selected market-specific livestreams |
| Gemini | Answers and explanations about sports and athletes, planning help and NBC/Peacock entertainment segments |
| Google Search | Schedules, results, medal counts, highlights, recaps and localized time information |
| Google Maps | Exploration of Paris and Olympic venues with Photorealistic 3D Tiles |
Google’s broader Olympic package also promoted features in Google Play, Waze and Google Pay. Its overview is documented at Google’s Paris 2024 announcement.
How U.S. viewers watched with YouTube TV
YouTube TV was the paid live-TV route Google highlighted for viewers in the United States. For Paris 2024, YouTube said its service carried NBCUniversal channels including:

Viewing tools
- Multiview: compatible devices could show multiple NBCUniversal streams at once.
- Unlimited DVR: subscribers could record Olympic programming, with sports-oriented organization for recordings.
- Medal counts: YouTube TV promoted on-screen medal information.
- 4K: selected coverage was available in 4K through the applicable YouTube TV offering and supported hardware; it was not a guarantee that every event or device delivered 4K.
These were event-period features. Current YouTube TV prices, plans and channel lineups should not be used to reconstruct what a Paris 2024 subscription cost. The official service is at tv.youtube.com.
What Google TV actually provided
Google TV was a discovery and aggregation layer, not a separate Olympic rights package. Google placed an Olympics hub at the top of the For You tab from July 26 through August 11, 2024. It brought together live events from official broadcaster channels, highlights, interviews and behind-the-scenes material.

Selecting a program could open a broadcaster app or another service. A Google TV device did not automatically include a YouTube TV subscription, a free NBC stream or every event. The available stream depended on the viewer’s country, installed apps, subscriptions, device support and the broadcaster’s rights.
What Gemini added—and what it did not
“With Gemini” described an AI and promotional layer around the Games, not an AI Olympic broadcast. Google presented Gemini as a way to ask about unfamiliar sports, athletes and rules, explore Olympic subjects and plan activities such as a watch party.
In Google’s partnership with NBCUniversal and Team USA, NBC’s Leslie Jones was announced as using Gemini in Olympic-related segments on NBC and Peacock. Team USA athletes were also shown using Google products such as Lens, Circle to Search, Maps and Gemini while exploring Paris. NBCUniversal coverage was planned to include Google Maps Platform Photorealistic 3D Tiles depicting venues including Versailles, Roland Garros and the Aquatics Centre. Details appear in Google’s NBCUniversal and Team USA announcement.

Gemini was not described as replacing conventional commentators, delivering every live event or serving as the authoritative source for changing scores and schedules. For official results, qualification decisions, athlete status and schedule changes, viewers needed the Olympics or broadcaster’s information rather than an AI summary.
What ordinary YouTube offered
Ordinary YouTube was not simply a free worldwide feed of every Olympic event. Official broadcaster channels included NBCUniversal, Eurosport, Claro Sports, CazéTV and the International Olympic Committee, but each market received a different mix of live events, ceremony streams, highlights, replays, commentary and creator coverage.
In Brazil and Spanish-speaking Latin America, CazéTV and Claro Sports provided extensive live and multiview programming where their rights applied. In the United States, YouTube TV—not YouTube alone—was the product Google emphasized for broad NBCUniversal live-channel access. YouTube’s event guide is at YouTube’s Paris 2024 coverage announcement.

Was it free?
- The Google TV hub itself was a directory; it did not make the underlying streams free.
- YouTube TV required a paid subscription for its U.S. live-channel coverage.
- Official YouTube clips and highlights were often free, while livestream and replay availability varied by country and rights holder.
- NBCUniversal services could provide additional authenticated or event-specific access, depending on the market and program.
Why geography and equipment mattered
NBCUniversal’s lineup applied to the United States and should not be generalized globally. Eurosport, Claro Sports, CazéTV, the IOC and other partners handled different territories. A viewer’s country, account location and travel status could change what appeared.
Practical differences also came from:
- Google TV model and software version
- Whether the broadcaster’s app was installed and supported
- YouTube TV device compatibility
- 4K support for the specific program and hardware
- Local NBC affiliate carriage
- Whether the viewer was using YouTube, YouTube TV or a separate broadcaster app
A VPN was not a guaranteed or necessarily permitted solution for crossing rights boundaries; service terms and broadcasting agreements could restrict cross-border viewing.

The temporary Google TV Olympics hub and Paris Extra channels were tied to the 2024 Games and should not be assumed to remain active. Official Olympic and broadcaster channels may still offer archived highlights, interviews and replays, but catalogs change by country and over time. A new live-TV subscription generally makes sense now only for someone who also wants ongoing sports and network programming, not solely an archived Paris event.

YouTube later reported more than 40 billion minutes and 12 billion views of Paris 2024 Olympics content during its July 26–August 12 measurement window. Those figures are YouTube’s own platform reports, not independently audited audience measurements; see YouTube’s post-event recap.
The practical takeaway
Google made Paris 2024 easier to find and explore, but it was not the rights-holder. Google TV organized programming, YouTube TV supplied a paid U.S. route to NBCUniversal’s live channels, ordinary YouTube distributed market-specific official content, and Gemini supplied explanations and branded NBC segments. The underlying rights, subscription requirements and geographic limits remained with the broadcasters.
