Google ended production of Chromecast hardware and named the Google TV Streamer (4K) its successor. The change does not mean existing Chromecast devices were switched off: Google said their support policy would continue. The new Streamer is a more capable, more expensive set-top box—not a like-for-like replacement for Chromecast’s compact, low-cost dongle.
What Google announced
On August 6, 2024, Google announced the Google TV Streamer (4K), positioning it as both an entertainment device and a smart-home hub. Google said it would stop producing Chromecast devices and sell its remaining inventory until it ran out. The Streamer launched in the United States with a $99.99 list price; that is its launch MSRP, not a claim about its current price. Google described the Streamer as replacing Chromecast. That means the dedicated Chromecast hardware line ended; it does not mean Google Cast disappeared. Casting remains part of the broader Google ecosystem, while Google’s dedicated streaming hardware carries the Google TV Streamer name. The new device sits beside the television as a box rather than plugging in as a small HDMI dongle. How the Streamer differs from Chromecast with Google TV
The largest practical changes are the form factor, storage, wired networking, and smart-home hardware. Google’s comparison lists the following specifications; these are product specifications, not independent performance-test results.

Google lists the Streamer as supporting HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. Its specifications and comparison with the Chromecast models are on Google’s device comparison page. Google also describes the Streamer’s CPU as 22% faster than the Chromecast with Google TV 4K; that is Google’s comparison claim, not an independently measured promise that every app or task will be 22% faster.
The move from 8GB to 32GB of stated storage gives the Streamer more room for apps, but 32GB is the capacity before formatting, so the full amount is not available for user content. Ethernet can help where Wi-Fi is congested or unreliable, but only if a wired network connection is available near the television. The box form factor accommodates these features but is less discreet than a dongle hidden behind the screen.
What happens to an existing Chromecast?
Ending production is not the same as turning off devices already in use. Google said the discontinuation did not change its existing support policy for Chromecast products. That is not a guarantee of indefinite support or identical updates for every generation: update and feature eligibility can vary by model. Google says updates are generally delivered automatically where applicable.

For Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer, you can check for an update from the TV interface:
- Turn on the TV and select the input connected to the device.
- Open All settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Select System update and install an update if one is offered.
The device may be unavailable for casting while an update is being installed. Google’s instructions are in its Chromecast update help page.
If an older Chromecast stops working, the discontinuation alone does not establish the cause. Check its power supply and cable, TV HDMI input, Wi-Fi and router settings, Google Home app and account, and any relevant TV HDMI or HDCP settings. Older models may also have different support and feature eligibility from Chromecast with Google TV.

What the Streamer adds beyond video streaming
The Streamer runs Google TV, which brings together supported services, apps, and recommendations in a television interface. App availability and recommendations depend on the service, region, account, and app version; subscriptions may be required. Google also positions the hardware as a Google Home and Matter hub, with a built-in Thread border router. Those features matter most to households that use or plan to use compatible smart-home devices, rather than to everyone buying a streaming player.

The included voice remote has a customizable button and a Find My Remote feature. The device also supports Dolby Atmos, but Atmos playback is not guaranteed by the box alone: compatible content, app, television, soundbar or receiver, and audio configuration are needed.
Google promotes AI-powered recommendations and Gemini for TV features, but availability is conditional. Device, country, language, software, account, setup, and internet requirements can affect which features a viewer gets. Consult the Google product page for the applicable requirements; do not assume every Gemini feature is available on every Google TV device or in every market.

What you need to install it
The Streamer needs an HDMI connection and a separate power connection. Google says an HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately, so buyers should account for that if they do not already have a suitable cable. The official product information lists the cable requirement.
- A television with an HDMI port.
- Nearby power and an internet connection, by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- A Google Account and a compatible mobile device for setup.
- For 4K playback: a 4K-capable TV, compatible HDMI connection, supported 4K content, and adequate broadband. Google’s 4K playback requirements explain the display and connection conditions.
It also works with a 1080p television, but output is limited to up to 1080p on that display. A 4K device therefore does not make an HD television show 4K video. Ethernet provides a wired route to the network; it does not make the Streamer an offline media player. Streaming, account functions, updates, and many smart-home functions still rely on internet access.
Who should consider upgrading?
Keep your Chromecast if it still does the job
- You mainly cast occasionally from a phone and do not need a full TV interface.
- Your current device performs adequately and has enough room for the apps you use.
- You value a dongle that can be tucked behind the television.
- You do not need 4K, Ethernet, a remote finder, or Google Home/Matter/Thread hub functions.
- Your television’s built-in smart platform already meets your needs, or the Streamer’s higher product tier is difficult to justify.
Consider the Streamer for a specific upgrade need
- Your Chromecast with Google TV feels slow or you regularly run short of app storage.
- You want a dedicated remote and a full Google TV interface rather than relying mainly on phone casting.
- You have a 4K HDR television and want a device supporting Dolby Vision.
- You can use Ethernet because Wi-Fi near the TV is unreliable or congested.
- You use compatible Google Home, Matter, or Thread devices and would benefit from a hub in the living room.
The launch prices underline the change in category: Google’s comparison material listed the Chromecast with Google TV HD at $29.99 and the 4K model at $49.99, while the Streamer launched at $99.99 in the United States. Those are stated launch/list-price comparisons, not current store quotes. A buyer who only wants occasional casting or basic 1080p streaming may not get enough value from the Streamer’s added hardware to warrant moving up.

Is it a replacement for every Chromecast use?
It is the official successor to Chromecast in Google’s dedicated streaming hardware lineup, but not a physical or price-equivalent substitute for every device that ever used the Chromecast name. The Streamer is not a hidden-behind-the-TV dongle, and it does not preserve the old low-cost entry point. People who only cast occasionally may be better served by keeping an adequately working Chromecast; those seeking more storage, a remote-driven TV interface, Ethernet, or smart-home integration are closer to the Streamer’s intended audience.
For readers weighing other platforms, the choice is mostly about ecosystem and interface rather than a universal best device. Roku positions its players around its own streaming interface and ecosystem (Roku Ultra); Fire TV is centered on Amazon’s platform and Alexa (Amazon Fire TV); Apple TV 4K is designed for Apple’s ecosystem (Apple TV 4K). Check each live product page for current models and pricing. These alternatives do not make the Streamer’s Google Cast and Google Home/Thread features interchangeable; choose according to the services, devices, and interface your household uses.
