In November 2023, Google Pixel partnered with Odeon cinemas in the UK to replace the familiar pre-film “turn your phone off” reminder with a 30-second demonstration of the Pixel 8’s Audio Magic Eraser. Cinema sounds build on a black screen, then vanish one by one, before the co-branded punchline: “We don’t have Audio Magic Eraser at Odeon, so please switch off your phones.” The planned run lasted from early November through December 31, 2023, making this a historical campaign rather than a current Odeon promotion.
What the Odeon campaign was
The activation was a Google Pixel/Odeon cinema partnership delivered through Digital Cinema Media (DCM). Instead of treating Odeon as a conventional advertising screen, it took over the venue’s customary phone-off message and made that moment part of the product demonstration. The promoted range was Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, with Audio Magic Eraser providing the creative link between unwanted cinema noise and unwanted sound in a video.
DCM announced the campaign on November 6, 2023. Its description is the primary account of the execution: Google Pixel partners with Odeon to take over their “Turn Your Phone Off” message.

- The screen opens in black.
- The soundtrack establishes a cinema environment, adding elements such as audience chatter and rustling popcorn.
- A ringing phone enters the soundscape, making the familiar auditorium problem explicit.
- The sounds are removed individually, creating an audible before-and-after demonstration.
- The spot identifies Audio Magic Eraser as the explanation.
- It ends with the line: “We don’t have Audio Magic Eraser at Odeon, so please switch off your phones.”
This was a crafted commercial demonstration, not a Pixel phone processing the auditorium’s live sound in real time. The polished sequence uses sound design and editing to communicate the feature’s proposition quickly.

What Audio Magic Eraser means here
For this campaign, Audio Magic Eraser is presented as a Pixel feature intended to reduce or remove unwanted background sounds from videos. The advert first makes viewers hear the problem, then lets them hear the advertised solution. That makes the cinema setting more than a media placement: the venue supplies the exact kind of noise the feature is designed to address.
The commercial does not establish that the tool perfectly isolates every voice, ringtone or background sound, works losslessly, or performs identically on every recording. Those are product-performance questions outside the evidence of the campaign.

The 30-second takeover ran alongside Google Pixel’s 60-second hero advertisement. DCM also described a wider UK launch campaign using television, BVOD, SVOD, out-of-home, online video, display and social media. Crediting only Google and Odeon therefore misses the separate planning, media and production roles.

Why Dolby Atmos mattered
The bespoke spot was mixed in Dolby Atmos so its sound elements could be positioned and separated within the auditorium. That format suited an advert whose narrative is carried by the arrival and disappearance of individual noises. The announcement confirms the Atmos mix, but provides no independent measurement showing that it increased recall, sales or other campaign outcomes; any such effect is an informed interpretation rather than a reported result.

When and where it ran
The planned placement was the pre-film advertising reel across Odeon’s UK estate from early November through December 31, 2023. DCM listed releases including Killers of the Flower Moon, The Marvels, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Saltburn, Napoleon and Wonka around the period. Those titles indicate the seasonal cinema context, not proof that every Odeon screen or showtime carried the Pixel spot before each film.
Screen-by-screen reels could differ, and an Atmos mix does not guarantee that every auditorium reproduced the same object-based audio experience. The activation also used Odeon’s existing phone-off moment; it is not evidence that Odeon introduced a new phone policy.

Why the idea worked as cinema advertising
The setting supplies the problem
In a cinema, unwanted sound is immediately recognisable. Chatter, packaging and a ringing phone are not abstract examples; they are behaviours the audience has experienced in the same room.
The product demonstration is audible
Rather than explain a software feature at length, the spot lets viewers hear noise accumulate and then disappear. The sequence gives the proposition a simple structure: problem, removal, explanation.

The ending reverses the expected phone message
A phone brand telling cinema-goers to switch their phones off creates the campaign’s joke and makes the final instruction memorable. The product is useful for cleaning up a recording, but the venue still wants silence during the film.
The medium is part of the creative
The dark screen, auditorium acoustics and Atmos mix are not interchangeable with a standard online commercial. They make the placement itself part of the demonstration.
What the campaign does—and does not—prove
- It demonstrates how Google marketed Audio Magic Eraser, not how the feature performs under every real-world recording condition.
- The public campaign announcements do not report reach, brand lift, conversions, sales or independently audited effectiveness.
- Marketing Beat and other trade coverage described the activation as a “first” or “first-of-its-kind”; that wording should be understood as an industry or company characterization, not a universally verified historical finding. See Marketing Beat’s coverage.
- The documented schedule ended on December 31, 2023. It should not be presented as a campaign currently running in 2026.
- Audio Magic Eraser in this campaign concerns sound in videos, not the separate Magic Eraser tool used to remove objects from still photographs.
Why it remains a useful case study
The campaign’s strongest lesson is contextual alignment. The venue, audience behaviour, product feature and call to action all address unwanted sound, so the partnership feels like a designed experience rather than a sponsorship logo placed on a generic spot. DCM later included the work in its award-related campaign material, including What makes a DCM Award Winner?, but that recognition is not a substitute for independent performance data.
