Google Cloud Compute Engine vs. a Spare PC for 24/7 YouTube Live

A spare PC may be the simpler choice if it is already capable and your local power and internet are reliable. Compare real operating costs with a configured Compute Engine estimate before choosing.

Short answer: If you already own a suitable PC and it has reliable power and upload internet, using it is usually the simpler option—and may cost less. Google Cloud Compute Engine makes the encoder machine remotely accessible, but it is not a turnkey YouTube streaming service: you still configure the virtual machine (VM), install and maintain encoder software, monitor the broadcast, and pay for the VM and applicable storage and network use. Which option costs less depends on your actual PC power draw and electricity tariff, or your chosen cloud configuration and region.

If you want a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube without leaving your computer running, StreamNeo is a separate option: StreamNeo. It is not Compute Engine, and it does not stream camera footage.

What you are comparing

A spare PC runs an encoder in your home or office and sends the stream to YouTube. Compute Engine runs a VM in Google Cloud; you configure that VM and its encoder to send the same kind of stream. In either setup, YouTube receives an encoder feed using its server URL and a private stream key.

Compute Engine should not be confused with Google Cloud Live Stream API. Live Stream API is a separate managed encoding service with its own charges for active channels and outputs; it is not a Compute Engine VM price. If you are considering it, calculate it separately using Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

Which option fits your situation?

Decision factor Spare PC Compute Engine VM
Initial hardware No added hardware purchase if you already have a suitable computer; otherwise include its purchase cost. No local encoder PC is needed, though you will need a device to configure and manage the VM.
Recurring cost Electricity depends on the PC’s measured power draw and your local tariff. Include any broadband or backup-power costs that apply. VM runtime plus applicable disk, image, and network costs. The total depends on machine type, region, storage, network use, and any applicable discounts.
Setup and control Install and configure encoder software on the PC; plan for updates and unattended restarts. Configure the VM and encoder remotely; plan for access, updates, restarts, and monitoring.
Encoding capacity Depends on the PC’s CPU or GPU, encoder support, and chosen stream settings. Depends on the VM resources and whether its environment supports your encoder workflow.
Connectivity and failure points Local power, PC hardware, home or office internet, and unattended recovery. VM configuration, software, cloud billing and resources, and network or service dependencies.
A sensible fit when… You already have a capable machine, reliable local connectivity, and a low enough measured operating cost. Remote management or an existing cloud workflow makes the VM useful enough to justify its recurring charges and setup effort.

This is a decision framework, not a measured reliability ranking. Neither choice comes with a cost or uptime advantage established for every user; your hardware, network, cloud configuration, and monitoring needs determine the result.

How to compare the real costs

Estimate the spare PC’s electricity

Use this calculation: average wall power in kilowatts × hours in the billing period × electricity price per kilowatt-hour. For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. If the machine’s draw is unknown, measure it with a plug-in power meter while it is doing the actual streaming work. Idle draw or the power listed on a component’s label may not reflect continuous use.

For a useful comparison, include costs that change because the PC is streaming: electricity, any backup power, and any internet plan or connection you would otherwise not need. If you already own the PC and pay for broadband regardless, distinguish those existing expenses from incremental costs.

Estimate Compute Engine charges

Enter your intended region, machine type, disk or image, and expected network usage in the Google Cloud pricing calculator. Review VM instance pricing alongside disk and image pricing. The disk and image pricing page does not include VM instance or networking charges, so a disk estimate alone is not a full running cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a PC electricity estimate with a generic cloud VM figure and call the cheaper one universal. The calculation needs the PC’s measured draw and your electricity rate, or the cloud region, VM, storage, and network assumptions. Google Cloud prices and billing details can change; check the current calculator and pricing pages for your own configuration.

Set up either encoder for YouTube Live

1. Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder, the YouTube stream URL, and a stream key. If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel before, allow for YouTube’s activation process before the planned broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

2. Configure the machine and encoder

On the spare PC, install and configure encoder software that the computer can run reliably. On Compute Engine, first choose and configure a VM environment that supports your intended encoder workflow, then install and configure the software there. The VM is a rented machine, not a preconfigured YouTube encoder; you remain responsible for operating-system access, software setup, updates, restart behavior, and monitoring.

3. Set the YouTube ingest and stream settings

Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to connect to your stream, so do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot or command. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Match the actual settings to your encoder and content; the platform’s recommendations are not a promise that every machine can encode every format smoothly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a specific reference point, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. That figure applies to that stated resolution, frame rate, and codec; it is not a universal minimum or setting for other combinations. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

4. Check upload headroom and test the broadcast

A stable speed-test result alone does not guarantee a stable live stream. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. Test the stream at the intended settings, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and monitor audio and video during operation.

If a custom encoder has trouble connecting over RTMPS, YouTube’s developer guidance specifies a valid RTMPS ingestion endpoint on port 443 and use of the server hostname for SNI authentication. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily a 24/7 archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, schedule restarts or segments that end before the limit and keep a local recording as a backup where practical. Check YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance for the current policy.

Troubleshoot common problems

The stream will not connect

  • Check the server URL and key: Make sure the encoder is using the current YouTube ingest details and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced.
  • For RTMPS, verify the endpoint: Use a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443. If you use a custom encoder, check that it sends the server hostname needed for SNI authentication.
  • On Compute Engine, check the VM setup: Confirm the machine is running, the encoder is installed and configured, and the VM’s network and access settings allow the intended workflow.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health

  • Check real upload capacity: Compare actual available upload bandwidth with the stream bitrate, including the headroom YouTube recommends for primary and backup streams.
  • Reduce the workload if needed: If the encoder cannot maintain the chosen resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, use settings the PC or VM can sustain.
  • Preview and monitor: Inspect Live Control Room stream health and watch both audio and video rather than assuming that a successful connection means a healthy broadcast.

The stream stops after a local or VM interruption

  • On a spare PC: Check power, hardware, internet continuity, and whether the PC or encoder restarts cleanly after interruption.
  • On Compute Engine: Check VM state, software, access, and billing or resource configuration. Plan how you will detect a stopped encoder and restart it; running in the cloud does not remove the need for configuration and monitoring.

The broadcast has no usable archive

Check the duration of the uninterrupted session. A stream that exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour threshold may not be captured, so use shorter sessions and a local recording if preserving the program is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo replaces the always-running PC or self-managed VM workflow with three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. You do not need to keep a computer or home connection running. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
