It is designed to make playlists less jarring when a quiet ballad is followed by a heavily compressed pop, rock, or electronic track, reducing the need to reach for the volume buttons between songs.
The feature is appearing primarily in the Android and iPhone apps, but availability remains uneven. An updated app may not be enough: reports indicate that Google has also been enabling the feature server-side for selected accounts and devices.
What YouTube Music’s Consistent volume does
Recordings are not mastered to the same perceived loudness. A playlist can therefore jump from a relatively quiet older recording to a modern, aggressively compressed track—or drop sharply when the reverse happens. YouTube Music’s Consistent volume setting is intended to reduce those track-to-track differences.
In practical terms, it is a loudness-normalization feature. It aims to make consecutive songs play at roughly comparable perceived levels, so listeners do not have to adjust their phone, car stereo, speaker, or headphone volume after every transition.

- People listening through a car or another setup where manual volume adjustments are inconvenient.
- Anyone who finds abrupt changes startling or disruptive, especially during shuffle playback.
Google has not published a detailed technical specification for the feature. The available reporting does not establish its precise loudness target, gain range, algorithm, or whether it raises quiet tracks, attenuates loud ones, or uses a combination of both. It is therefore more accurate to describe Consistent volume as track-to-track loudness normalization than to call it a guaranteed equivalent of ReplayGain or an audiophile-grade mastering system.
It also should not be described as making every recording identical in volume or preserving every detail of the original dynamics. User reports suggest that results can vary, but those reports are anecdotal rather than controlled testing.
How to turn on Consistent volume
If the feature has reached your account, check these locations in the YouTube Music mobile app:
Android
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Playback.
- Look for Consistent volume and enable it.
iPhone and iPad
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Playback & restrictions.
- Look for Consistent volume and switch it on.
A later rollout also added a shortcut from the Now Playing screen. While a song is playing, open the overflow menu—usually the three-dot button—and check whether Consistent volume appears there. Menu placement can change between app versions and platforms, so checking both the settings page and the Now Playing menu is the most reliable approach.
Why you may not see the setting
The first public reports appeared on April 18, 2025, and described a limited rollout. The option was reported on iOS version 8.15 while some Android users could not find it on apparently compatible builds. Other reports similarly characterized the rollout as slow, experimental, or limited to selected accounts.
That means the following troubleshooting steps may help, but none guarantees access:

- Update YouTube Music through the App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the app after updating.
- Check both locations: Settings > Playback, or Settings > Playback & restrictions on Apple devices, and the Now Playing overflow menu.
- Sign out and back in if the app appears to be stuck on an older configuration.
- Wait for server-side activation. If Google has not enabled the feature for your account or device, reinstalling the app may not make it appear.
By September 2025, a community post quoting a YouTube Music feature roundup said volume normalization had been implemented on Android and iOS. However, user reports continued to describe inconsistent access in 2026. Those reports indicate an uneven rollout experience, not an official confirmation that every account worldwide has the feature.
The official Google Play listing for YouTube Music shows that the Android app remains actively updated, including an update dated July 8, 2026. The listing does not, however, provide a definitive statement that Consistent volume is available to every Android user or that it works in every YouTube Music client.

The names are similar, but the controls belong to different products and address slightly different playback situations.
| Feature | Where it applies | What it is intended to do |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent volume | YouTube Music | Normalize loudness between music tracks so consecutive songs are less likely to sound dramatically louder or quieter. |
| Stable volume | Ordinary YouTube videos | Balance the range between quiet and loud portions within eligible videos and continuously adjust playback levels. |
Google’s Stable volume support page says Stable volume is enabled by default for eligible YouTube videos, is not available for every video, and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos.
In other words, turning on Stable volume in the regular YouTube player is not a substitute for finding Consistent volume in YouTube Music. The available evidence also does not establish whether Google uses identical processing technology for the two features.
What about YouTube Music on the web?
Mobile availability is better documented than web-player availability. Initial reports said Consistent volume was appearing on Android and iOS but not on the YouTube Music website. Later user discussions continued to ask about normalization on the web player and mentioned browser extensions as possible workarounds.

- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
That does not prove a permanent, universal web restriction, but users should not assume that an option visible in the mobile app will also appear at music.youtube.com. If you primarily listen in a desktop browser, check the player’s menus for the setting; if it is absent, the feature may not have been enabled for that client.
Does it change the sound quality?
Any loudness-normalization system can affect the level at which a track is played, but the public information available for Consistent volume is not detailed enough to say exactly how it treats every recording. Google has not publicly documented whether it applies the same target to albums, playlists, music videos, user uploads, and other content types.
Listeners who care about an album’s intended sequencing or dynamics may want to compare playback with the setting on and off. The most useful test is a familiar playlist containing both quiet and loud masters. If the transitions become more comfortable without making quieter passages feel unnaturally raised, leave it enabled. If the presentation sounds less natural to you, the setting can be switched off.
There is no published evidence in the available reporting that Consistent volume delivers a specific hearing-safety benefit. It may reduce unpleasant or startling transitions, but it is not a hearing-protection feature and does not replace sensible listening habits. Keep device and headphone levels moderate, particularly when listening for long periods, and do not treat normalization as permission to increase the overall volume.
What Google has not confirmed
Several practical details remain unclear because Google’s public help documentation covers Stable volume in ordinary YouTube but does not provide an equivalent technical support page for YouTube Music’s Consistent volume. As of the available August 12, 2026 research snapshot, the following points should be treated as unresolved:
- The exact loudness target used by the feature.
- The maximum amount of gain reduction or increase applied to a track.
- Whether the system primarily lowers loud recordings, raises quiet ones, or does both.
- Whether album playback is treated differently from shuffled playlists.
- Whether Android and iOS use precisely the same processing.
- Whether the option is available in the web player for all users.
- Whether all music tracks, music videos, uploads, and other YouTube Music content are eligible.
For now, the strongest conclusion is also the simplest: Consistent volume is a useful convenience setting for reducing obvious loudness differences between songs, but its rollout and technical behavior are not yet documented with the precision that would support broader claims.

Should you enable it?
Try it if your playlists regularly lurch between noticeably different volume levels. It is most likely to help with shuffle playback and mixed catalogs. After enabling it, listen to several familiar songs and decide whether the transitions feel smoother.
Leave it off if you prefer each recording’s unadjusted presentation, mostly listen to carefully sequenced albums, or find that the normalization changes the balance of quiet passages in a way you dislike. Because the control is reversible, the practical choice is simply to compare both modes on your own equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Consistent volume available to everyone on YouTube Music?
Not necessarily. Reports describe an uneven rollout across Android and iOS, even on compatible app versions. Availability may depend on server-side activation, the platform, the account, and the app build.
What app version added YouTube Music Consistent volume?
The initial reports identified YouTube Music version 8.15 and later, but the version number alone does not guarantee access. Google may also need to enable the feature for your account or device.
Is Consistent volume the same as Stable volume?
No. Consistent volume is the YouTube Music control for reducing loudness differences between tracks. Stable volume is an ordinary YouTube feature that balances quiet and loud sections within eligible videos, and Google says Stable volume is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos.
Does Consistent volume protect your hearing?
There is no evidence in the available reporting that it provides a medical or hearing-safety benefit. It may make sudden transitions less startling, but users should still keep listening levels moderate and take normal precautions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use Consistent volume on the YouTube Music web player?
Mobile support is better documented. The setting was initially reported on Android and iOS, while web availability remained uncertain. Check the web player’s menus, but do not assume the mobile feature is available in every browser session.
The Bottom Line
Consistent volume is YouTube Music’s answer to abrupt jumps between differently mastered songs. Find it under Settings > Playback on Android or Settings > Playback & restrictions on iOS, and check the Now Playing overflow menu as well. If it is missing, update the app—but be aware that Google’s uneven, potentially server-controlled rollout may be the reason you still cannot see it.
