Indy, a dog who moves with his owner Todd to a rural family home, notices dangers the humans cannot—or do not—understand. The result is a brief, slow-burning horror film that can feel oddly comforting because Indy’s loyalty remains steady even as the house grows more frightening.
What is Good Boy about?
After leaving city life for an old countryside family home, Todd brings Indy along. Indy reacts to unsettling parts of the property and to changes in Todd, while supernatural presences and ordinary hazards remain difficult to tell apart. Rather than supply a clear human explanation, the film lets viewers piece together events through the dog’s reactions and scraps of conversation. The official film website presents the story as one of a dog sensing supernatural forces in his new home.

That approach makes Indy more than a mascot or a device for making the setting feel cute: he is the audience’s guide. The story’s limited perspective leaves the haunting ambiguous for much of the film, so the tension comes partly from watching Indy detect something and trying to work out what it means.
Is Indy the main character?
Yes. Indy is the protagonist, and the filmmaking largely stays close to his height, attention, and limited understanding. BFI’s review describes the camera staying at dog level for most of the film and points to dog-vision effects. Director Ben Leonberg told Salon that nearly every frame features Indy or a dog’s-eye view, with a few deliberate exceptions.

- Good Boy [Blu-Ray]
The choice changes the usual haunted-house grammar. A noise in another room is not an invitation for a human character to investigate; it is something Indy may hear, smell, or notice without understanding its source. Human faces often sit outside the dog-centered frame, and the audience has to read the people as Indy does: through movement, voices, and behavior.
Why does Indy’s bond with Todd matter?
The emotional center is Indy’s attachment to Todd. As Todd grows unwell and the danger around the house intensifies, Indy’s instinct is to stay near him. The BFI review describes the film as a study of the bond between man and animal; interviews with the filmmakers also identify loss, fear, and companionship as central concerns. That loyalty provides warmth without dissolving the dread: Indy’s devotion is comforting precisely because the situation is not.

Is Good Boy scary?
It is better described as atmospheric and quietly unsettling than as a barrage of shocks. The film builds creeping dread from Indy’s attention to unexplained sounds and details, and from the audience’s uncertainty about what is threatening Todd. If you want frequent jump scares or a tightly explained supernatural plot, this may feel restrained. If you enjoy ambiguity, a patient pace, and suspense shaped by a fresh point of view, the approach has more to offer.
The method has a limit: repeated scenes of Indy investigating noises can begin to feel similar. The Guardian’s review praises the ingenuity and emotional effect of the perspective but finds that repetition can make even the short film feel stretched. Whether that rhythm works will depend on how much you enjoy slow observation over plot momentum.

How did the filmmakers build Indy’s point of view?
Leonberg made the feature with his own dog, Indy. In the Salon interview, Leonberg describes working with the dog’s natural behavior, curiosity, cues, framing, and off-camera participation rather than treating him as a conventional trained animal actor. “He doesn’t know he was in a movie,” Leonberg said of Indy.
The production shaped scenes around Indy’s reactions and placed the camera at his eyeline. Human dialogue and the soundscape were rebuilt in postproduction, using scripted lines while removing spoken prompts used during filming. Fred Film Radio’s interview also describes ground-level camerawork and scenes shot more than once to integrate Indy’s performance. These details help explain why the film feels dog-centered without suggesting that Indy understood the story or was frightened on set.

How long is Good Boy?
Good Boy runs 73 minutes, according to The Guardian’s 2025 review. Its compact length suits a film built around mood and repeated acts of watching, though the repetition may still register for viewers who want the plot to move faster.

Verdict: a fresh perspective with a patient pace
Good Boy makes a familiar haunted-house setup feel distinctive by letting a dog’s attention govern what the audience sees and understands. Indy and Todd’s bond gives the horror an affecting center, while the restrained pacing and repeated investigations will not suit everyone. It is most rewarding for viewers who value mood, ambiguity, and an unusual point of view over a steady stream of scares or a densely explained plot.
