Spoilers for Good Boy (2025). Todd dies in the basement, but Indy survives and leaves with Todd’s sister, Vera. Director Ben Leonberg leaves the house’s entity deliberately unexplained: it may be a real supernatural presence, or the form Indy’s experience gives to Todd’s illness and approaching death. The ending settles Indy’s choice, not the mystery.
What happens at the end of Good Boy?
Todd’s health has been worsening throughout the film. He dies in the basement, and Indy cannot save him. In the final moments, Indy faces a choice: remain in the darkness with Todd’s spirit or memory, or leave with Vera and continue living. Indy goes with Vera.

Leonberg said the filmmakers wanted Indy to survive, describing that outcome as the right resolution to the dog’s hero’s journey. The choice matters because Indy has spent the story trying to stay close to Todd; leaving is painful, but it is also a step toward life beyond that bond.
Does the dog die in Good Boy?
No. Todd dies, but Indy survives and leaves with Vera. The ending is sad because Indy loses Todd, not because the dog dies.

Is the house actually haunted?
The film does not conclusively identify the entity. Leonberg has said that both a literal supernatural presence and a presence shaped by Indy’s perception of Todd’s decline can work as readings of the story. In the first, the entity exists independently in the house; in the second, it gives visual form to the illness and death Indy senses but cannot understand or explain.

That uncertainty is intentional, not a puzzle the ending solves. Leonberg told TODAY.com, in an interview excerpt republished by AOL, “I think horror really works when there is an ambiguity between two things.” The film confirms Todd’s death and Indy’s departure, while leaving the entity’s status open.

What does the ending mean for Indy?
Leonberg describes the film as a love story from Indy’s point of view. “Throughout the film, from Indy’s point of view, this isn’t a horror movie, it’s a love story,” he told GQ. The haunted-house story is therefore also about a dog’s attachment to Todd and the pain of separation.
Indy’s departure does not undo that love. It marks a change: he cannot stay with Todd, so he goes with Vera rather than remain in the darkness. Leonberg said, “We always wanted Indy to live just because that’s also the correct resolution of his hero’s journey.” That is why the ending can be mournful and still give Indy a future.

Why is Good Boy told from a dog’s perspective?
Leonberg said the idea began with watching the dog in Poltergeist appear to notice a haunting before the humans did. He built Good Boy around a familiar question: why does a dog bark at an apparently empty room? By grounding the story in Indy’s senses and limited, nonverbal understanding, the film makes the audience share his alarm without giving him the human knowledge needed to explain it.
That perspective supports both interpretations of the entity. Indy may be sensing an actual supernatural presence, or registering Todd’s decline in a way the film turns into horror imagery. Either way, the story’s emotional focus remains Indy’s bond with Todd and his final decision to leave.
