Gollum’s story begins long before the War of the Ring: Bilbo meets him in Third Age 2941, while the Fellowship forms in 3018 and the One Ring is destroyed in 3019. Those dates frame the story, but they do not provide a complete date-by-date record of Gollum’s life. This timeline separates events established in the published books from an additional episode preserved in Tolkien’s manuscript planning chronology.
How to read Gollum’s timeline
The main published chronology is in Appendix B, “The Tale of Years,” of The Lord of the Rings. It gives dated events in the story, especially for 3018 and 3019. Tolkien’s separate planning papers contain some offstage details, but those should not be mistaken for scenes or dates explicitly supplied by the published narrative.
The Tolkien Estate notes that Tolkien later revisited The Hobbit to bring it into line with the wider story. That matters when discussing the Ring episode: a claim about the text should be tied to the edition or continuity in question, rather than assumed to be unchanged from the book’s first publication. The available sources do not provide a passage-by-passage comparison of editions.
Gollum’s timeline: the established dates
| Third Age date | Event | What the date establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2941 | Bilbo meets Gollum in The Hobbit. | This is the key dated meeting between Gollum and Bilbo, well before the main events of The Lord of the Rings. |
| 3018 | The Fellowship forms in Rivendell. | This marks the start of the Fellowship’s journey in the chronology of the Ring quest. |
| 3019 | The One Ring is destroyed. | This is the endpoint of the central quest. The broad date references here do not independently specify Gollum’s death date. |
| 3021 | Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, and Elrond leave Middle-earth. | This frames the story’s postwar ending; it is not another event in Gollum’s life. |
The Tolkien Estate gives the broad year anchors for Bilbo’s meeting with Gollum, the Ring’s destruction, and the Ring-bearers’ departure. Appendix B is the place to consult for the published chronology’s more detailed sequence across 3018 and 3019.

What happened to Gollum offstage in January 3019?
Tolkien’s manuscript planning chronology, as transcribed and discussed by William Cloud Hicklin, records an episode dated January 24: Gollum lurks near Lothlórien, is captured by Uglúk, escapes, and reveals that Hobbits from the Shire had been with Gandalf. This is supplementary chronology, not a scene presented in the published novel. Its value is that it gives a glimpse of Gollum’s movements while the main characters’ stories unfold elsewhere.
Why not every stage has a firm date here
The year anchors place Bilbo’s encounter, the Fellowship’s formation, the Ring’s destruction, and the departure from Middle-earth in sequence. They do not, by themselves, date every stage of Gollum’s later movements, captivity, escape, or death. Tolkien’s chronology was coordinated with characters moving across Middle-earth; the Estate describes keeping those scattered journeys consistent as a challenge in composing the book. For an exact date attached to an individual episode, use the relevant passage in the chosen edition rather than filling gaps by inference.
