What counted as a snub or surprise?
“Snub” and “surprise” are judgments made by commentators, not official Golden Globe findings. The official [2024 nominations page] establishes who was nominated and in which category; outlets including Vanity Fair and Variety supplied the contemporary commentary on omissions and unexpected choices.

That distinction matters: a film can miss one category while earning nominations elsewhere, and a series can be nominated without its cast appearing in the acting races. The Globes divided film picture and performance awards between drama and musical or comedy; television categories covered drama, musical or comedy, and limited series, anthology series or television movies.
Film: the omissions and unexpected picks
The Color Purple missed the picture lineup, not the nominations entirely
Variety drew attention to The Color Purple’s absence from the musical-or-comedy picture nominees. It was not a shutout: Fantasia Barrino was nominated for female actor in a musical or comedy, and Danielle Brooks for supporting female actor. The precise criticism, then, concerns the missing picture slot and any particular performers not selected—not an absence from the slate as a whole. Slow Horses and All the Light We Cannot See drew attention
Vanity Fair identified Slow Horses as an unexpected inclusion; the official list confirms Gary Oldman’s nomination for male actor in a drama series. The outlet also called the limited-series nomination for All the Light We Cannot See surprising, noting that the series’ cast received no acting nominations. The distinction is between recognition for the series itself and recognition for individual performers.
Several familiar television names were absent from the relevant races
Variety named Jennifer Aniston, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams among past television honorees or nominees overlooked in the 2024 slate. These are omissions from the relevant acting categories, as opposed to a judgment about the performers’ broader careers. The 2024 ceremony added two awards: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures, and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’s nomination for the former made the category’s practical effect especially visible: it created a place for a concert film in a field distinct from the traditional picture and acting races. A nomination in a new category should be read in that category’s context, not treated as interchangeable with a drama or comedy picture nomination.
The nominations arrived during an institutional transition
The Golden Globes described a new leadership structure and an expanded voting body of 300 individuals in 75 countries — Golden Globes, 2023.
