This is the order of his life in the story—not the order in which the franchise’s manga, series, and films were released.
What is the order of Goku’s story from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Super?
The broad story sequence is Dragon Ball, the Z-era events (told in Dragon Ball Z or the recut Dragon Ball Z Kai), and then Dragon Ball Super. In life-story terms, Goku grows from a child adventurer into a young martial-arts champion, becomes a husband and father, learns he is a Saiyan, and faces increasingly large threats. Toei’s official summaries place Super after the Majin Buu threat has ended.
The official franchise chronology tracks a different thing: release and broadcast milestones. It lists the Dragon Ball manga beginning serialization in 1984, its anime beginning in 1986, Dragon Ball Z beginning in 1989, and Dragon Ball Super starting serialization and broadcast in 2015. Those real-world years are not dates in Goku’s life. Dragon Ball Official Site chronology
Goku’s life, in story order
1. Childhood: the Dragon Ball quest
Goku’s story opens with his meeting Bulma, who is searching for the seven Dragon Balls to make a wish. Their adventure brings Goku into contact with new friends, martial-arts training, tournaments, and increasingly dangerous opponents. Toei’s summary of the original series frames it around the search for the orbs and the wish they can grant. Toei Animation’s Dragon Ball series guide

Dragon Ball Official Site retrospective, December 4, 2025
3. The 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai: Goku reaches adulthood
Goku’s victory at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai marks a transition from the boy at the center of the early adventures to a grown martial artist. The retrospective identifies the tournament and his win as a major turning point. It does not establish a precise age, so a specific number is not needed to understand the sequence. 6. The Androids and Cell
After Trunks appears, the retrospective places the Androids’ arrival three years later. Cell then emerges from the future and attempts to absorb Androids 17 and 18. The crisis culminates in the Cell Games, where Gohan—not Goku—has the decisive awakening. This stretch shifts the story’s focus among Goku, his family, and the next generation. Dragon Ball Official Site retrospective, December 4, 2025
7. Majin Buu and the end of the Z-era threat
The Majin Buu conflict is the last major threat in the sequence before Dragon Ball Super. Toei’s synopsis for Super begins after Buu’s threat has been defeated, with Goku and his friends living in peace. That gives a clear story-order bridge from the Z-era events into the next series. For television anime, the original Dragon Ball leads into the Z-era adaptation. Dragon Ball Z Kai is another presentation of Z-era material, not a new phase in Goku’s life. Toei lists Dragon Ball Z at 291 episodes, Kai at 98, and Kai: The Final Chapters at 69. These are catalog episode counts, not story milestones. The right route depends on whether you prefer the original anime presentation or the shorter Kai version.
Where do GT, DAIMA, and the films fit?
Dragon Ball GT
Dragon Ball GT is an official Toei anime series, with 64 episodes in Toei’s guide. Its premise turns Goku into a child and sends him across the universe to recover Dragon Balls. The official sources cited here do not explicitly settle GT’s relationship to the Super story, so treat it as a separate branch rather than inserting it into the sequence above as though its placement were established. Toei Animation’s Dragon Ball GT series guide
Dragon Ball DAIMA
Dragon Ball DAIMA began broadcasting in 2024 and has 20 episodes in Toei’s guide. Its premise has Goku and company suddenly becoming small and investigating the Demon Realm. The official sources cited here do not establish its exact placement against every Super arc, so it is best acknowledged as another official series without forcing a precise position into this timeline. Films and release dates
Films such as Battle of Gods (2013), Resurrection ‘F’ (2015), Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018), and Super Hero (2022) have their own theatrical release years in the official chronology. Release order alone does not establish the exact placement of every film relative to the anime or manga versions of overlapping stories. Dragon Ball Official Site chronology
What is changing in 2026?
The official Dragon Ball Super: Beerus page says the anime is set to begin anew in 2026 as an enhanced edition, with added and redrawn cuts and a reconstructed narrative. The announcement page does not specify a premiere date, platform, or territory, so those details should not be assumed. Official Dragon Ball Super: Beerus page
