The group played “Ah! Ça Ira” at the Conciergerie with mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti.
What Gojira performed at Paris 2024
The performance unfolded at the Conciergerie, the former royal palace and prison in central Paris. Gojira and mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti performed “Ah! Ça Ira,” a song associated with the French Revolution. Metal instrumentation, operatic vocals and revolutionary imagery made the segment one of the ceremony’s most striking musical scenes.

The distinction attached to the performance is specific: contemporary reporting called Gojira the first metal band to perform at an Olympic opening ceremony. It does not establish that no metal artist had performed at any other Olympic event.
How the collaboration came together
Drummer Mario Duplantier said the band received the call in November 2023 and kept the invitation secret. Gojira then worked with ceremony composer Victor Le Masne to shape music for the Revolution-themed segment.

Joe Duplantier, the band’s singer and guitarist, said he selected positive passages from the historical song for his contribution. He described his intended message as hopeful and nonviolent, telling NBC Olympics: “Let us rejoice because good times will come without fear of fire or flame.” He also summarized the message as: “It’s never too late to make things right.” Those are Duplantier’s descriptions of his contribution, not a claim that every creative choice in the ceremony carried the same interpretation.
Why the moment mattered for Gojira
Gojira formed in 1996 under the name Godzilla and adopted the name Gojira in 2001. The band’s appearance brought a French metal group into one of the world’s most visible ceremonial broadcasts, while the choice of “Ah! Ça Ira” tied its heavy sound to the ceremony’s French revolutionary theme.

Contemporary coverage reported Gojira as the first metal band at an Olympic opening ceremony. That wording matters: the claim is about the opening ceremony, not every concert, competition, or other event associated with the Olympic Games. The Paris performance has already taken place, on July 26, 2024.
