Denis Leary gives the mismatch plenty of bluster, while the estranged father-daughter relationship adds a more personal thread. The result is an amiable, sometimes silly workplace comedy whose familiar rhythms keep it from feeling like a fresh deployment.
A commander sent to the least martial post imaginable
FOX’s premise puts U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Quinn in command of a Netherlands base after an unfiltered rant gets him reassigned. Quinn has served in war zones, but this installation has no guns, weapons, or tactical purpose. It is known instead for its comforts, including a notably good commissary, a bowling alley, and a fromagerie. Quinn’s mission to restore discipline is therefore less a battle plan than a collision with a workplace already content with its own pace. FOX’s series-order announcement sets up that contrast as the show’s central comic engine.
The base is a useful setting because it gives Quinn’s inflated military self-image something small and ordinary to push against. Orders that might sound imposing in a war zone look absurd beside bowling and cheese. The Netherlands location and its comforts do more than decorate the premise, though the show’s strongest jokes come from the contrast itself rather than from a particularly deep exploration of place.
Leary’s bluster is the engine—and the risk
Leary plays Quinn as loud, certain, and accustomed to commanding attention. That familiar edge supplies immediate comic energy: he treats minor workplace routines as tests of military order, and his confidence makes the mismatch funnier. It can also dominate a scene. When Quinn’s forceful reactions are the main event, the character’s volume risks becoming the joke instead of sharpening it.

Leary has described George Patton as a touchstone for the character. In an interview with Fox News Digital, he said he drew on Patton’s “vanity and that ego and that sort of self-importance.” That is Leary explaining an acting reference, not a claim that Quinn is a historical portrait. Read the interview.
FOX President Michael Thorn’s description of the show as capturing Leary’s “comic genius and in-your-face storytelling style” is network promotion, but it does identify the series’ bet: Quinn’s abrasive certainty should carry the comedy. Thorn’s comment appears in FOX’s announcement. Whether that style delights or wears thin will depend on a viewer’s tolerance for broad, high-volume comedy.

Maggie gives the workplace conflict a family stake
Quinn’s former interim leader is Maggie, his estranged daughter, played by Taylor Misiak. Their relationship gives the chain-of-command premise a personal complication: this is not simply a difficult commander trying to change a relaxed workplace, but a father trying to assert authority with a daughter who already knows him beyond his rank. That tension gives the comedy a more human shape than the base’s routines alone can provide.
The relationship is a promising counterweight to Quinn’s bluster, though the premise does not automatically make every exchange emotionally rich. Its value lies in the possibility of conflict that cannot be settled by issuing an order. FOX’s January 2025 cast announcement also names Danny Pudi, Laci Mosley, and Hal Cumpston among the main cast, with Joe Morton, Catherine Tate, and Dempsey Bryk appearing in recurring roles. The ensemble fills out the base, but the formula stays familiar
A military workplace comedy needs more than a commanding officer delivering orders: the people receiving them must feel like characters in their own right. The ensemble broadens the comic terrain around Quinn and Maggie, giving the show room for the low-stakes routines that make this base unlike the kind of post Quinn imagines he deserves. The strongest use of the group is in showing how little appetite the installation has for his grand campaign of discipline.
That premise is more specific than a generic office sitcom, but the humor can still fall back on conventional, broad beats. Los Angeles Times television critic Robert Lloyd called the series conventional and sometimes silly, while identifying potential in Quinn’s clash with the base, the father-daughter dynamic, and his difficulty with modern language and technology. That is one critic’s qualified response, not a consensus verdict. Read Robert Lloyd’s review.

It is a reasonable enlistment for viewers who enjoy character comedy built around an overconfident authority figure being wrong-footed by ordinary life. Leary’s commanding presence gives the premise a clear center, and Maggie’s place in Quinn’s chain of command makes the conflict more than a string of workplace orders. Viewers looking for sharper satire, consistently restrained humor, or a deeply distinctive ensemble may find the show’s conventional approach limiting.
