Gladiator II’s Real History: Geta, Caracalla and the Betrayals Behind the Film

Geta and Caracalla really shared power and ended in bloody conflict—but Gladiator II changes the chronology, biographies and arena spectacle around them.

Gladiator II draws on real Roman rulers and arena spectacles, but its story rearranges chronology and invents key biographies. Geta and Caracalla were brothers, not twins; their joint rule after their father’s death was brief and ended when Caracalla had Geta killed. The adult Lucius and the film’s version of Macrinus diverge sharply from the historical record, while flooded-arena spectacles have ancient precedent—but sharks in the Colosseum do not.

How accurate is Gladiator II?

The film is best understood as historical fiction built around real names, not a reconstruction of events. Its most important departures involve who lived when, how the imperial succession unfolded, and what is known about the people at the center of the plot. Some arena spectacle has historical grounding; specific cinematic set pieces do not.

That distinction matters because a recognizable Roman name does not guarantee a historically accurate role. The broad outline of the brothers’ co-rule and Geta’s murder is supported, but the motives behind their conflict are uncertain. Smithsonian Magazine’s overview of the films’ Roman history is available at Smithsonian Magazine.

Who were the “twin emperors” in real life?

Geta and Caracalla were sons of Septimius Severus, not twins. Caracalla was named co-emperor in 198, and Geta received that status in 209, according to Smithsonian. Their father died in 211, after which the brothers shared imperial power. Caracalla soon had Geta murdered.

The film’s compressed story can make the brothers seem like part of a direct succession from Commodus. That skips the civil conflict after Commodus’s death. Commodus was murdered in 192; Septimius Severus emerged from the succession struggle as the dominant ruler by 197. His sons’ elevation came later.

The real timeline

Year Historical event Why it matters to the film
180 CE Marcus Aurelius died and Commodus became emperor. The succession plot in Gladiator is fictionalized. Smithsonian Magazine The first film reshapes the start of the imperial story that the sequel inherits.
182 CE Lucilla was executed after plotting against Commodus. Smithsonian Magazine; University of British Columbia News Her historical fate predates the sequel’s setting.
192 CE Commodus was murdered by conspirators; his death was followed by civil war, not a restoration of the Republic. Smithsonian Magazine The path to Septimius Severus and his sons was more complicated than a simple handover.
By 197 CE Septimius Severus had become the dominant ruler after the succession conflict. Smithsonian Magazine He—not a direct succession from Commodus to his sons—established the family’s rule.
198 and 209 CE Caracalla was named co-emperor in 198; Geta was named in 209. Smithsonian Magazine Their paths to shared rule were staggered, not simultaneous.
211 CE After Septimius Severus died, the brothers shared power. Caracalla soon had Geta killed. Smithsonian Magazine; TIME This is the historical core behind the film’s brother-versus-brother conflict.
217 CE Caracalla was assassinated during a campaign in the eastern empire; Macrinus succeeded him. Smithsonian Magazine; TIME Macrinus’s rise belongs after Caracalla’s death, rather than to the film’s invented career arc.

What happened between Geta and Caracalla?

The brothers’ joint rule and Geta’s murder are the firm outline; the reason for their hostility is much less certain. TIME quotes classicist Mary Beard saying, “It’s anybody’s guess what causes the apparent hatred between Caracalla and Geta.” The surviving accounts do not provide a dependable explanation of their relationship.

Some ancient accounts proposed that the brothers planned to divide the empire, but that division did not happen. Andrew Scott, a Villanova University professor of Classical Studies, describes that proposal in TIME’s account of the brothers; it should be treated as a reported plan in ancient sources, not as an established explanation for the murder. Read the discussion at TIME’s history of Geta and Caracalla.

  • From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.

Lucius and Lucilla: the film changes their chronology

Lucilla was a historical figure, but she was executed in 182, decades before the events associated with Geta and Caracalla. Her son, Lucius Verus, died young. He was not the adult secret heir and gladiator protagonist portrayed in the sequel. Smithsonian and University of British Columbia News both note the gap between the film’s characters and this chronology.

The name Lucius Verus also belongs to a real Roman emperor who ruled with Marcus Aurelius, but the sequel’s adult protagonist is not a faithful depiction of that historical figure. The key point is the mismatch of biography and timeline: Lucilla’s son did not live the adult life the film gives its Lucius.

Who was Macrinus?

Macrinus was real, and he did become emperor after Caracalla’s assassination in 217. The historical career described by Smithsonian and TIME is very different from the film’s: Macrinus was a lawyer and bureaucrat who headed the Praetorian Guard. The cited accounts do not support the movie’s backstory of an enslaved gladiator trainer.

Which arena scenes have historical support?

Roman spectacles could be brutal, and gladiators came from several social groups: enslaved people, prisoners of war, condemned criminals, and free volunteers. But that does not mean every bout was intended to end in death. A University of British Columbia News interview with scholars Charmaine Gorrie and Siobhán McElduff reports an estimate that 10–20 percent of gladiator fights ended in death. It is an estimate, not a settled universal rate for every period, venue, or type of contest.

The same UBC article reports 10,000 gladiators at games lasting 120 days in the context of spectacles during Trajan’s reign. That figure describes those specific games; it should not be taken as a typical count for ordinary events.

Flooded arenas and the shark question

Staged naval events have historical precedent. Smithsonian recounts the ancient historian Cassius Dio’s description of Titus flooding the Colosseum for a naval spectacle at its opening in 80 CE, and TIME says the venue was periodically flooded for staged naval battles. This earlier evidence shows that water spectacles were possible; it does not establish that the film’s particular event occurred under Geta and Caracalla.

Sharks are another matter. The cited accounts report no evidence for sharks in the ancient Colosseum. Scott tells TIME, “I don’t think I’ve ever read the word shark in an ancient historical narrative.” The film’s shark-filled battle is cinematic invention, not an event supported by the evidence cited here. TIME’s discussion of the arena spectacle is at TIME.

What the films borrow from Commodus—and what they change

Commodus did take part in arena activities, and a wrestler was involved in his death. Smithsonian reports that he was strangled in his bath in 192 by a wrestler paid by advisers. The details and chronology in the films freely reshape the historical events.

Smithsonian quotes Cassius Dio’s description of Commodus as a ruler who “devoted most of his life to ease and to horses and to combats of wild beasts and of men.” That is an ancient author’s characterization, not a neutral diagnosis. The surviving accounts of Roman emperors should be read with attention to who wrote them and how they framed their subjects.

Why “accurate or inaccurate” is too simple

Gladiator II combines real rulers, a genuine imperial power struggle, altered biographies, compressed dates, and unsupported spectacle. Its strongest historical foundation is the broad sequence of Septimius Severus’s sons sharing power and Caracalla eliminating Geta. The film’s Lucius, Macrinus, and shark battle depart much further from the cited record.

Ancient evidence also leaves real uncertainty: historians can outline what happened without confidently explaining the brothers’ private motives or treating every spectacular account as literal fact. As historian Allen Ward cautioned in a 2001 discussion of historical films, quoted by Smithsonian in 2024: “Certainly creative artists need to be granted some poetic license, but that should not be a permit for the wholesale disregard of facts in historical fiction and costume dramas.”
