Girl in White Cotton is Avni Doshi’s debut novel about Antara and Tara, a daughter and mother bound by love, resentment, memory and care. The book was first published in India as Girl in White Cotton and later appeared in the UK as Burnt Sugar—two territory-specific titles for the same novel. Its “not-romance” framing points to intimacy and betrayal between family members, not an absence of love.
What is Girl in White Cotton about?
Antara’s mother, Tara, once rejected the conventions of domestic life. She left a loveless marriage, joined an ashram, briefly lived as a beggar and pursued a homeless artist while Antara was still young. Years later, Tara has memory problems. She mishandles her maid’s wages and leaves the gas on, while Antara confronts the difficult prospect of caring for a mother she believes did not care for her.
The novel follows Antara’s perspective as past and present press on one another. Tara’s memory loss complicates their relationship, but the book does not reduce it to a simple story of a daughter’s resentment or a mother’s neglect. The Booker Prize reading guide calls it “a love story” between mother and daughter; Doshi’s official book page describes obsession and betrayal “not between lovers – between mother and daughter.”
Why call it a “not-romance”?
The phrase signals the intensity usually associated with romantic love—attachment, jealousy, hurt and betrayal—while locating that intensity in a mother-daughter bond. It is a useful way to describe the novel’s emotional tension, but it should not be taken to mean that Antara and Tara’s relationship lacks love. The Booker Prize judges described the book as an unflinching examination of an unusual mother-daughter relationship, at once emotionally wrenching and cathartic.

Memory, motherhood and the “monstrous mother”
Doshi has connected the novel to what she called “another kind of myth of mother, namely the monstrous mother, the shadow of motherhood that we don’t like to talk about, the one we try to disown.” Rather than treating motherhood as automatically selfless or ideal, the novel makes room for a mother who can be difficult, damaging and still deeply consequential to her child.
Memory loss is part of the plot, not a basis for diagnosing Tara. Doshi said she incorporated Alzheimer’s disease into the novel after her grandmother was diagnosed; that context does not establish a clinical diagnosis for the fictional character. The Booker reading guide asks readers to consider how Tara’s memory loss affects Antara’s experience of her and what changes when Antara has a baby of her own.

How the form reflects Antara’s inner life
Doshi has said she wanted domestic interiors and Antara’s interiority to speak in the same voice, with rooms acting as containers and mirrors for trauma. The novel’s short sections, bursts of memory and white space give the narrative pauses and gaps as it moves through remembered experience. Doshi described those formal choices as intrinsic to the way people remember the past.
In a 2020 interview, Doshi said writing the novel took seven years and about eight drafts. That is her account of the writing process, not the book’s publication history.

The book may suit readers interested in psychologically complex family relationships, unsettled memories and literary fiction that resists idealized accounts of motherhood. Its central tension is not a mystery to solve but a relationship to sit with: Antara’s care for Tara exists alongside anger about the past, and neither feeling cancels the other.
