Published in 1927, the children’s novel follows a pigeon raised in India who is trained to carry messages in France during the First World War. The award is a matter of record; whether the book is now “forgotten” cannot be established from the available readership evidence.
What is Gay-Neck about?
The novel follows Gay-Neck, a prized pigeon, from his upbringing and training in India to his wartime service as a messenger in France and his return. The American Library Association’s historical essay describes the story as drawing partly on Mukerji’s experience and highlights its theme of kinship between people and winged animals. That is the essay’s account of the book’s roots, not evidence that every episode is autobiographical.
The first-person narrative opens with a dedication to Suresh Chandra Banerji. Mukerji writes, “You know the country where Gay-Neck grew,” a direct indication of the story’s Indian setting. Read the 1927 book.
Did the book win the Newbery Medal?
Yes. E. P. Dutton published Gay-Neck: The Story of a Pigeon in 1927, and the American Library Association records it as the 1928 John Newbery Medal winner. The two years refer to different things: publication and award. The precise formulation is that Mukerji’s 1927 book won the 1928 medal.

The Newbery Medal recognizes the most distinguished American children’s book published in the preceding year. It is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children, an ALA division; the eligibility rules specify publication in English in the United States by an American publisher and an author who is a U.S. citizen or resident. The medal year should therefore not be mistaken for the book’s publication year. See the ALA’s award history and criteria.
Who was Dhan Gopal Mukerji?
Mukerji was the Indian author of the novel. The ALA’s Newbery timeline identifies him as the first person of color and the first Asian American to win the medal. That distinction is specifically about Newbery winners; it should not be broadened into a claim about all American literary prizes or children’s literature more generally. What makes the book notable as a historical document?
The story brings an Indian setting and a pigeon’s wartime messenger service in France into an American children’s book that received the Newbery Medal. Its central relationship between a human community and an animal also gives the adventure a theme beyond wartime action. The 1927 edition credits Boris Artzybasheff as illustrator and was reprinted several times through 1929, evidence of early reprinting rather than a measure of how many people read the book then or do so today.
Catalog records show later publication history but do not confirm current stock or condition. Open Library records a 1927 E. P. Dutton edition and a 1968 English edition. Hachette India lists a combined edition of Gay-Neck and Ghond, the Hunter, so that listing is not a standalone copy of the pigeon novel. Check the Open Library record or the Hachette India combined-edition listing.

Is Gay-Neck really forgotten?
“Forgotten” works as a headline description of a book less prominent in many contemporary conversations, but the available records do not establish how widely it is read or remembered today. The evidence supports a more precise conclusion: it is a historically recognized Newbery winner with cataloged editions, including a combined edition listed by a publisher. Those facts show continuing bibliographic visibility, not current readership or retail availability.
