The seven regulars of Gilligan’s Island were Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells. Six have documented dates of death; the latest listed here is Wells, who died in 2020. CBS reported that Louise was the sole surviving regular cast member in December 2020, but that dated report does not establish her status today.
The seven regular castaways
CBS’s original series ran from 1964 to 1967 for three seasons and 98 episodes. Its premise stranded five passengers and two crew members on a remote island after their three-hour boat tour was caught in foul weather, as the Television Academy recounts in its Bob Denver obituary.

What happened to the cast after the series?
Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr.
Denver’s television career began before he became Gilligan, with the role of Maynard G. Krebs on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. He died in 2005. Hale, whose Skipper became closely associated with him, died in 1990; he described the character as his alter ego in the 1988 statement CBS later quoted.
Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer
Backus continued to be recognized for his voice work as Mr. Magoo as well as for Thurston Howell III. He died in 1989 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Schafer returned as Lovey Howell in three reunion movies, with the last of the three listed above released in 1981. She died in 1991.

Tina Louise
Louise played Ginger Grant. CBS reported in 2014 that Louise and Wells were the two surviving regular cast members after Johnson’s death; following Wells’s death, CBS reported Louise as the sole surviving regular in December 2020. These reports establish the status described at those dates only.
Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells
Johnson’s work included western roles before and after the sitcom, followed by later guest appearances, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary. He died in 2014. Wells, who played Mary Ann, had a theater arts and design degree and worked in stage productions and later screen appearances. CBS also noted that she wrote What Would Mary Ann Do? for the show’s 50th anniversary. She died in 2020.

How to read the cast’s “where are they now” status
Six cast members’ deaths are documented in the cited obituaries: Backus (1989), Hale (1990), Schafer (1991), Denver (2005), Johnson (2014) and Wells (2020). CBS’s December 2020 description of Louise as the only surviving regular is the latest point-in-time status in the sources cited here; it should not be converted into a claim about her status in 2026.
