Gigi Hadid said she auditioned for Rapunzel in Disney’s live-action Tangled, taking singing lessons during fashion month to prepare. She did not get the role: Disney announced Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider in January 2026. The adaptation was reported paused in 2025, but it is not accurate to call it cancelled.
What Gigi Hadid said about her audition
In a Vogue cover-story interview with Kendall Jenner, Hadid said she auditioned for Rapunzel and prepared by taking singing lessons during fashion month. ELLE and The Independent reported her comments in September 2025. Hadid said: “I was really proud of my scene. The singing…I knew they were going to go with a real singer, but I’ll show you my audition scene later,” Hadid said. She also asked, “What do we do in this job anymore that scares us?” ELLE’s account and The Independent’s report attribute the remarks to that interview; they are not an independently reviewed full transcript.

The available coverage establishes that Hadid auditioned, but does not say how far she advanced or identify a specific audition round. She was not announced as a cast member, and the reporting says she did not get the role.
Who was cast as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider?
Walt Disney Pictures announced Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider on January 7, 2026, according to the Associated Press. The Independent also reported the casting and said development had resumed in the second half of 2025. Hadid’s audition was not an announcement that she had been cast or was a finalist.
#1 Best Overall
- Story of Rapunzel, a girl, who after being locked in a tower by an evil witch, lets her beautiful hair grow until it was long enough to reach the ground. Soon, a prince arrives and calls to Rapunzel to let down her hair so he can climb into the tower window to rescue her.
Is Disney’s live-action Tangled remake cancelled?
No. The project was reported paused in April 2025 after Snow White’s performance, but a pause is not the same as a formal cancellation announcement. Disney’s January 2026 casting announcement shows the company proceeded with the adaptation after that reported pause. The Independent covered the pause in its April 2025 report and its January 2026 casting story. AP said no release date had been announced when it published its casting report on January 7, 2026; that statement reflects the information available at that time.
How the live-action project reached its casting announcement
- December 2024: The adaptation was reported in development, with Michael Gracey directing and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson writing.
- April 2025: The Independent reported that Disney had paused the project following the performance of Snow White.
- September 2025: Hadid’s audition comments from the Vogue cover story were reported.
- January 7, 2026: Disney announced Croft as Rapunzel and Manheim as Flynn Rider.
How this relates to the original Tangled
Disney’s animated Tangled premiered in 2010, with Mandy Moore voicing Rapunzel and Zachary Levi voicing Flynn Rider. The Associated Press reported that the film grossed more than $590 million worldwide. The live-action adaptation is a separate production; Hadid’s audition was for its Rapunzel role, not the animated film.
